FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY
The people of Nepal have been fighting for democracy since the 1940s, when the Rana autocracy was in power.
To abolish the Rana Dynasty and restore the position of Shah Kings
DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT: 1950
The Ranas seized all the power from the Shah Kings but revered the existence of King in Nepal.
They had violated the basic human rights of the people of Nepal.
They had partnered with the British regime to keep their administration on track.
With the autocratic activities of the Rana rulers, there was an increased dissatisfaction among the general Nepalese people.
Execution of Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Sukraraj Shastri, Dasharath Chand and Ganga Lal Shrestha in January 1941.
ROOTS OF 1950 MASS MOVEMENT
Praja Parishad movement of 1936-37 (Whose activities were suppressed by the then Rana regime)
Massive People`s Uprising of 1950 ( called 2007 revolution which was led by the leaders of Nepali Congress)
FORMS OF 1950 MOVEMENT
An end to autocratic Rana regime that ruled the country for 104 years since 1846 A.D.
Nepal first saw a dawn of democracy and the parliamentary government under the multi-party system was adopted for some years which was later followed by Panchayat System in 1960
RESULTS OF 1950 MOVEMENT

Beginning of the Panchayat System in 1960.Imprisonment of the political leaders by the
King.
BEGINNING POINTS OF 1990 MOVEMENT
Reinstallation of the multi party democratic system.
New democratic constitution of the Kingdom was promulgated on November 9, 1990.
More freedom to the people of Nepal.
OUTCOMES OF 1990 MOVEMENT
Quarrels between various political parties and numerous social problems caused a Maoist rebellion called the Nepalese People's War, which was started since 1996.
Political parties’ failure to fulfill the people’s demands.
Royal Massacre of 2001.The Royal takeover of February 1, 2005 by
the then King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev of Nepal.

THE MAOIST CIVIL WAR
A CATALYST FOR 2006 MOVEMENT
The Royal takeover on February 01, 2001.Detainment of the high profile political
leaders.Cutting of telephone lines of the common
people violating the national and international laws by the King himself.

King Gyanendra reinstated the old Nepal House of Representatives on April 24, 2006.
End of the Maoist Civil War and signing of CPA.May 18 Act (2006)- Putting 90,000 troops in the hands of the parliament- Placing a tax on the royal family and its assets- Ending the Raj Parishad, a royal advisory council- Eliminating royal references from army and government
titles- Declaring Nepal a secular country, not a Hindu Kingdom- Scrapping the national anthem until a new one is made- Scrapping the king's position as the Supreme Commander of
the Army
