We are going to talk about descriptive writing
Definition A description is a picture in
words that helps the reader see, hear, taste, smell or feel something that the writer has experienced
You can use language to create a vivid impression for your readers
The panda was black with a white face and black ears and round, smudgy black
eyes
The chocolate cake was delicious! It had soft butter icing which melted in your mouth, and was decorated with
red raspberries
When we use write a description we must remember to:
Begin with interesting opening sentences that tell what the description is about
Include important details about what you are describing
Put details in time order or in order of importance
End in a way that wraps up the description
Descriptive writing focuses on observation and paints for the reader
That means using words so that they paint a picture for the reader
Use exact vivid words to create a picture in the reader’s mind
From a distant it looked like a multi-colouring cloud as we drew nearer it transformed into hundreds of butterflies fluttering in the cool breeze.
Butterflies in all imaginable colours, blue, pink, red, yellow, purple or magenta
You can do this using tools like
Dictionaries Thesaurus etc.
If you want to use word
He ran.
You can replace it with.
He jogged.
He fled.
He sprinted away.
He stormed off.
