Aims of Discover Learning Service
Informed By Project Brief and Stakeholder Needs Analysis3 broad aims:To help Carers use technology in ways that:
1. Support access to Local Information and Services via effective signposting;
2. Enhance ability to safely share experiences and gain support from others;
3. Assist Carers to support themselves and to enhance their care skills.
What we know about carers?
Carer Population CharacteristicsHighly Heterogeneous Populations of Learners representing:
Different access to technologies
Different internet connection speeds or non at all
Varying experience and skills with digital technologies
Different topic interests
Carer Population Characteristics
Generally very little time to learn
Varying step on and step off points
Little access to support and facilitation when learning
Varying levels of disability, many elderly carers

Subject and Skills Focus
Emphasis: Initial focus will overtly reflect Carer interests rather than Digital Literacy Skills. Informed by our stakeholder consultations Discover learning addresses four areas of skills and knowledge development:
Accessing quality web based information to increase knowledge of various topic areas
Using technology to communicate with others Using technology to enhance care skills Using technology to evidence skills and experience

Topics include: Digital Skills, Dementia, Assistive Technologies, Moving and Handling, COPD, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, Finance,

Using technology in ways that help Carers to share experiences and

Enhanced Care Skills
Games, simulations and resources to support skills development in areas of
relevance to Carers.
Making Your Skills and Experience Count
Evidencing skills and experience, creating a CV and preparing for interview.

• Helps Carers to set up their own communities using Mahara (Experienced)
• Provide Support to Carers in using web 2.0 safely.
• Quizzes for self assessment and certificate generation
• Some online facilitation will be required
Enhanced Care Skills

Carers.
• Games based learning using VCC to support “Falls Prevention”, “Using Assistive Technology in the Home”, and two additional scenarios
• Mini Course based on “Dementia”
• Activities and self assessment for different levels
