Topic Sentence is..

• A paragraph contains one sentence about the main idea to develop other ideas.

• Example : - (in paragraph 1) =

Javanese culture is one example of a culture in Indonesia . And etc.. (next sentence)

The topic is : Indonesia has a lot of cultures

A Strong Topic Sentence

• is the most general statement in the paragraph

• makes a claim about the topic• can express an opinion or judgment• suggest

• General ideas are the largest one• Specific ideas are smaller and fit within the

general ones• example : a) There are many traditional foods in

pekalonganb) Pindang tetel is the most popular food in

pekalonganThere are many traditional foods in

The Topic Sentence make a Claim

• The topic of paragraph is different from its topic sentence.

• Example : • Pindang tetel is popular food in

pekalongan .• Key word is “popular’’ and “popular’’

will claim that topic sentence .Description,example,stories,comp

arison,explanation,and etc.

The Topic can Express opinion or a Judgment

Example : Alfin is a student in class B of EEL

(this is a fact on a real) Alfin is the most handsome Man in

Class B of EEL (this is expresses an opinion)

Most topic sentence include an opinion

word or phrase that the remainder the

paragraph can develop specifially.

Topic Sentence May Suggest Its Support

• A good topic sentence not only introduces the paragraph but also indicates the main support that following in the body of paraghraph.

• Example :• There are three important reasons why

university of pekalongan is the best University• The remainder of the paragraph will

explain the tree reasons why University of Pekalongan is the best University

Supporting Sentence

• Supporting sentences are called "supporting" because they "support," or explain, the idea expressed in the topic sentence. Of course, paragraphs in English often have more than two supporting ideas.

Concluding sentence

• A Concluding Sentence is the last sentence of a paragraph(s), it summarizes everything that you just wrote and it is somewhat like your Introduction Sentence.

• HOW ??• summarising the points you have made.• repeating words or phrases (or synonyms for

them) from the topic sentence.• using linking words that indicate that

conclusions are being drawn, for example, therefore, thus, resulting.
