2. What is diectic expression? A deictic expression is an expression that has a diectic usage as its basic usage, though it may also have nondeictic usages. 3. Deixis The word deixis comes from the Greek adjective deiktikos meaning pointing, indicative. Deixis is the marking of the orientation or position of entities and events with respect to certainpoints of reference. 4. Example I want this dish, this dish, and this dish. To interpret this utterance, the waiter must have information about who I refers to, about the time at which the utterance is produced, and about what the three noun phrases this dish refer to. We say that I is a deictic expression, and so are the presenttense form of the verb and the 5. Kinds of diexis Deixis consists of three semantic notions, all related to the orientation or position of events or entities in the real world. 6. 1. Personal Deixis Personal deixis is commonly conveyed through personal pronouns: I versus you versus he or she. I really should be going now. Did you return the video I asked you to? 7. 2. Spatial Deixis Spatial deixis refers to orientation in space: here versus there and this versus that The child that (away from you and me) 8. 3.
