Anti-thyroid drugs
Goiter
• Enlargement of thyroid gland
• Hypothyroidism– Primary failure of thyroid gland
T3 and T4, TSH Yes
– Secondary to hypothalamic or anterior pituitary failureT3 and T4,TRH & TSH No
– Lack of dietary iodineT3 & T4, TSH Yes
Hyperthyroidism
• Abnormal presence of long acting thyroid stimulators T3 & T4, TSH Yes
• Secondary to hypothalamic or anterior pituitary secretion T3 & T4, TRH & TSH Yes
• Hypersecreting thyroid tumor T3 & T4, TSH No
Exopthalmos
• Complex water retaining carbohydrates depoisted behind eyes
• Degenerative changes in extra-ocular muscles
Types of Hypothyroidism
• Endemic colloid goiter
• Idiopathic Non-toxic colloid goiter– Mild thyroiditis– Deficiency of enzymes
• Myxedema– Gel nature of excess fluid which is immobile– Edema is non-pitting
• Athersclerosis
Investigations
• Free thyroxine
• BMR
• TSH
• TSI
Cretinism• Congenital• Endemic
