What are Energy Management Systems?

Energy savings are at the forefront of the actions to contribute to the sustainability of human activities. Organizations have a major role to play by controlling their energy consumption and reducing their energy bill. Energy Management Systems offer a systemic approach to monitor and reduce the energy consumption in all kinds of organizations. EN 16001 is the European standard for Energy Management Systems. It is based on Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, with requirements for establishing an energy policy with concrete objectives, putting in place actions to reduce and monitor energy use, verifying energy savings and planning improvements. It offers a comprehensive set of guidelines to meet carbon emissions reduction requirements. EN 16001 is based on regulatory compliance and has the same structure as ISO 14001. What is ISO 26000..?
SA 8000 is the first auditable standard for social accountability. In
particular, it is compatible with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS1
8001 structure and based on conventions of the International Labour
Organisation [ILO), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The world wide

The British Retail Consortium is the lead trade association
representing the whole range of retailers, from the large
multiples and department stores in the United Kingdom. In
1998 the British Retail Consortium (BRC), responding to
industry needs, developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard to be used to evaluate manufacturers
of retailers own brand food products. It is designed to be used as a pillar to help retailers and brand owners with
their 'due diligence' defence, should they be subject to a prosecution by the enforcement authorities. Under EU
food Law, retailers and brand owners have a legal responsibility for their brands.
In 2002, in order to create common food safety standard, German food retailers from the HDE
(Hauptverband des Deutschen Einzelhandels) have developed a common audit standard called
International Food Standard or IFS. In 2003, French food retailers (and wholesalers) from the
FCD have joined the IFS Working Group and have contributed to development of IFS version 4.

Application Description
Many standards have been developed within food safety: specific company
standards, legal regulations, as well as standards developed by retailers. Their
proliferation made their application difficult. At the same time, food safety
principles have spread across the world. The safety of foodstuffs has become a
major issue for all players in the food chain. A single standard with worldwide
reach, and including the food safety principles, thus became necessary. This was
the reason ISO developed and released ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management
System in 2005. There are number of technical standards and guidelines in the
series of ISO 22000 and published to facilitate the industry for effective food safety management system.
ISO 22000:2005 is best standard to integrate other management system concepts like Quality, Environment and
Occupational Health and Safety. The design of ISO 22000 is very much in lined with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and

The scheme is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
FSSC 22000 contains a complete certification scheme for Food Safety Systems based ISO 22000: 2005, Publicly
Available Specification for Prerequisite Programs on food safety for food manufacturing, BSI PAS 220: 2008. The
scheme is using existing standards for certification (ISO 22000, PAS 220 and ISO 22003) and the certification will be
accredited under the standard ISO guide 17021. Manufacturers that are already certified against ISO 22000 will
only need an additional review against BSI PAS 220 to meet this certification scheme.
The FSSC 22000 certification scheme has been given full recognition by the Global Food Safety Initiative Board of
Directors. This follows an extensive benchmarking process using the requirements laid out in the GFSI Guidance

It covers both quality & feed safety management systems, traceability, product regulatory compliance… and many other areas.The European Union has developed many food regulations in order to protect the consumer's health. In the last few years, EU regulation has become even more complex, as many food safety crises have occurred due to animal feed.
