Oil Leak Diagnostic and Resolution

Summer 2014

Initial Mistake: Oil galleys should have been plugged during the engine build, but were not.

(Three Plugs Forgotten)

Location of Plugs:

1. Underside of block (driver’s side) by the oil pressure relief valve. 2. Underside of block (driver’s side) by the oil pressure relief valve. 3. Passenger side front behind the motor mount.

Solution

Plugs 1 and 2:

1. Hold oil pan. 2. Found diagnosed oil plugs. 3. Allocated brass stock. 4. Machined the brass to size. (Larger plug hole: 0.441in , Smaller hole: 0.314in)

- Machined smaller plug to 0.317in , larger plug to 0.446in 5. Both plugs were tapped into place with a punch and hammer. 6. Larger plug drilled to be flush with the surface. 7. Reinstall oil pan.

Plug 3:

1. Disconnect battery. 2. Remove alternator. 3. Remove number 1 spark plug and seal its hole. 4. Use engine hoist to support engine by using the alternator mount location. 5. Removed passenger-side motor mount and bracket. 6. Measured hole. (hole could be tapped to 1/8 npt) 7. Cleaned out hole using rags/brake cleaner. 8. Installed 1/8inch npt plug. (used liquid Teflon thread sealant) 9. Reassembled motor mount and bracket. 10. Reinstalled alternator. 11. Reinstalled spark plug.
