Double page spreads – Indie magazines.

• Looking at these double page spreads, which are from the music magazine NME, I can see that they mainly only have one image, which is usually the main image. The image is usually on the left or right side and the article is on either side where the image hasn’t been placed. I can also see that the band or artists name is big and bold with the article underneath it. There are also columns and a colour scheme. For my genre, the amount of words that are in the article are usually around 370-400.

• This article is of The Vaccines from the music magazine NME. Whilst reading this article I can see that the article is in first person. The person writing this article is talking about the vaccines as well as adding some quotes from the band. The journalist also refers to past songs and compares them to The Vaccines. The journalist also talks about the bands songs – how they are, what they sound like and how long they are. You get the impression that the journalist is a fan of The Vaccines, or has done a lot of research on them, especially regarding other artists in order for the writer to compare their songs to others.

• Reading this article, I can see that it is in third person describing the journalists journey towards getting the information for the article. By using third person, it creates a vivid image in your mind and helps you picture the scene which makes you feel as if you were actually there interviewing them or getting ready to interview them. The article then goes into interviewing the band which is mainly about their career so far and their success.

• Once again, the article has been written in third person. I feel as if this is done in order to build up anticipation for the reader. I think this is done so that reader carries on reading in order to get to the interview. After the journalist has set the scene, the interview begins and it is mainly about new releases and new songs. It is a build up to the main part of the article.

COMPARISIONDouble page spreads – Pop magazines.

• Comparing two different music genres, I can see that an Indie magazine interview is very different from a pop magazine interview. For example, an Indie magazine interview is usually written in third person – it sets the scene and describes the journey up to getting the interview and talking with the artist. A pop magazine is very different. For example, the interviewer would usually ask questions and the interviewee would respond. The question would be written out in a pop magazine with the answer underneath where as an Indie magazine has the artists speech within the article; it is as if the journalist is writing a story. Seen as my genre is Indie, I will be doing something similar to the Indie double page spreads.
