WELCOME!

Craigs ListIve learned that people are not that interested in what I have to say.Ive learned it takes years to build trust and only seconds to destroy it.Ive learned you never lose a true friend.Ive learned it is not what you have in your life that counts but who you have in life.Ive learned you cannot make someone love you; all you can do is be someone who can be loved.Ive learned you should never ruin an apology with an excuse.Ive learned never to pass up a bathroom.Ive learned we should not compare our weaknesses to someone elses strengths.Ive learned you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

Craigs ListIve learned you can keep going long after you think you cant.Ive learned that either you control your attitude or it will control you.Ive learned that if its worth doing its worth doing right.Ive learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when youre down will be the ones to help you get back up. Ive learned it is best to leave the toilet seat down.Ive learned that no one wants to hear about the labor pains, they just want to see the baby.Ive learned that sometimes when I am angry, I have the right to be angry, but it doesnt give me the right to be mean or vindictive.Ive learned that when I forgive I feel better.

Craigs ListIve learned that you always have two choices.Ive learned happiness is a choice.Ive learned that two people can look at the exact same thing and see it totally different. Ive learned that we should be kind to everyone as you never know what burdens they bare.Ive learned that people appreciate a thank you.Ive learned that teachers and others who work with children can make a difference.

Craigs ListIve learned that success in education is not based on technology or the latest educational theory.

Craigs ListIve learned that success in the classroom is and always has been: caring teachers. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, instructors who dont give up on their students.

Craigs ListIve learned that success in the classroom is and always has been: caring teachers. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, instructors who dont give up on their students.

Ive learned that you do make a difference! You are loved!Thank you!

So, whats been happening since we last met?

A LOT OF LEARNING!

Teaching Professionals taking their own time to improve themselves through continuous learning.

Teachers Being Great Learners!

Bonneville Teachers are Great Learners!

In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.~Eric Hoffer, American Philosopher~

Teams of Teachers and Administrators have Spent Time this Summer Getting Very Excited About What They Have Learned! Please smile when you see them:

They will probably stand out by THEIR ENTHUSIASM!*

Premature Excitement on a New Venture is Fragile~Michael Fullan~

TIAWhere We Have BeenFor the past 3 years the district has participated in the Total Instructional Alignment Summer Working Conference in preparation for implementing the new Common Core State Standards. These TIA Documents Identify:What do we want students to know and be able to do?How will we know if they have learned it?What will we do if they have or have not learned it?

Where We AreWeve produced Cross-walk Curriculum Blueprints that align to the CCSS for teachers to begin the implementation process.

Where We Are GoingIncrementally implement the Math Common Core State Standards this fall.Build Units that correlate to Common Core Standards in all core areas.Decompose English Language Arts Standards from TIA documents.

PLCs

So, What is a PLC?

A Collaborative Culture with a Focus on Learning for All

The 3 Big Ideas of Professional Learning CommunitiesEnsuring That All Students LearnCreating a Culture of CollaborationHaving a Focus on Results

4 Key Questions of PLCsWhat exactly do we want all students to learn?

How will we know if theyve learned it?

How will we respond when some students dont learn?

How can we extend and enrich the learning for students who have demonstrated proficiency?

A PLC is a Commitment to Continuous Improvement

Participation in the PLC process is not reserved for those designated as leader.Rather, it is a responsibility of every member of the organization.

A team can make better decisions, solve more complex problems, and do more to enhance creativity and build skills than individuals working alone. . . . Teams are not just nice to have. They are hard-core units of the production.(Blanchard, 2007, p. 17 as quoted in Learning By Doing)

*

Teams bring together complementary skills and experience that exceed those of any individual on the team. Teams are more effective in problem solving, provide a unique social dimension that enhances work, motivates, and fosters peer and internal accountability. (Katzenbach & Smith, 1993, p. 18 as quoted in Learning By Doing)

As each PLC considers theirSchool Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals:

Ask

What are we about in Public Education? What is our Moral Imperative?

A Moral Imperative is:

Something that must happen because it is the right thing.

A categorical imperative.

The dictates of ones conscience.

A principle originating inside a persons heart and mind that compels that person to act.

Making a difference in students and teachers lives, as well as making a difference at the school, district, and societal levels.

Moral Imperative Realized~Michael Fullan ~

Hope is Not a Change Strategy.Dont Blame the Students. Its All About the Learning Not the Teaching.Michael Fullans Educational Core Beliefs

Students Come First:

1:1 Computing Device

Technology Has Dramatically Affected Every Sector of SocietyNow, Finally EDUCATIONIntegrating Technology, Pedagogy, and Knowledge is Fundamentally Liberating.

It is Disruptive Innovation.

*

New Learning With Technology:Irresistibly Engaging for Both Students and Teachers.Elegantly Efficient and Easy to Use.Steeped in Real-life Problem Solving.Technology Must Be Used as Transformational Not Substitutional.

Learning Experiences for All Students Need to Be:

People only see what they are prepared to see.~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

In Dealing With New Technology:*

Technology is only technology for those that were born before technology. For those born in technology, it is the way of life, not a tool

Challenge of Change

The future arrives too soon and in the wrong order.~Alvin Toffler, American Author~

Michael Fullans Advice is:

Have Passion, Purpose, and PlayMust Start with SomethingMust Create the Minimal Viable Product

Disruptive InnovationThe Technological Paradigm Shift: Monks Transitioning from the Scroll to the Beek!

When Challenged with Innovation and Change We must:Ready-Fire-Aim

Innovation and ChangeFailure is okayGet over it!Find Out What Others Are DoingTry It On For SizeMaybe It Will Fit

Ready-Fire-Aim:Stop Planning, Start Doing!Sometimes Things BreakJust Fix em!

If you set your goals ridiculously high and its a failure, you will fail above everyone else's success.~James Cameron, film director~

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.~Michelangelo~

They might be quite surprised!

Community UnderstandingWhat is good for schools is good for them.Connecting the dots between their quality of life and the success of their schools.Ideology must change. We are in a different world and must teach our children differently.

What is Driving the Public Away from Public Schools? We are compared to not just each other, but everyone in the world. International test scores do not compare Apples to Apples.

What is Driving the Public Away from Public Schools? It was Japan. Now it is Finland.54,300,000 students in the USA737,000 students in Finland

So, whats the problem?Finland has 1.3% the student population of AmericaIn Finland, their students are all native from Finland. In America, students are from all over the world.

What is Driving the Public Away from Public Schools? When TIMSS scores were disaggregated, USAs white, upper middleclass students from schools with less than 5% free and reduced lunch

The United States of America OUTSCORED ALL NATIONS of the World!~Jamie Vollmer~

Idaho High School Graduates Score in the Bottom Quartile in Finishing College in a Timely Manner!

Idaho Graduation Rate is Very High91.7%(SDE 2010)

Idaho Ranks 40th Nationally for Students Who Progress from 9th Grade Through College (NCHEMS).

Does it matter if it takes 5, 6, or 7 years to graduate with a Bachelors Degree?

Does it mean public schools are failing?

Who asks you after you tell them where you graduated from college: Well, how many years did it take you?

Which Quartile Is Your Superintendent In?

It took me 8 years to earn my Bachelor's Degree!3 years for A.A. in California1 year BYU2 years Japan2 more years BYU = Finished B.S. Degree at 26 years oldSo what?Earned M.Ed. 6 years laterEd.D. 14 years after that

Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed.

As Educators:The power that we have is immense and frightening.

We can influence so many people without knowing it.

Little gestures of kindness We will never know the impact.

In the End, When We Return to Our Maker:

Its All About Relationships and Making a Difference in the Lives of Others-

Enjoy the Process.
