Research Basics ! The systematic investigation into and study
of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions
Creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications
If education is not based upon research and evidence, then it runs the risk of being:
Dogma – Theory – Ideology – Convenience - PrejudiceSINCE 1881
Basic Questions on Research ALL TEACHERS ARE RESEARCHERS
NOT ALL RESEARCHERS ARE TEACHERS
What ? Why ? Where ? When ? Who(m) ? and How ?

Formal & Informal research Informal Research By the nature teachers are informal researchers Every day - with a new lesson to try, a new strategy to
test, a new thought about how to manage Better research skills - critically reflexive - look
outside their own experience will find and evaluate possible solutions
Make their teaching more effective Formal Research Formal research is “hard and it is technical” It is rigorous, and accountability for validity and
reliability are deeply entrenched within the system SINCE 1881
Research Can Help Teachers… To understand what works and why, What the short and long-term implications
are, Provide a justification and rationale for
decisions and actions, Help to build a repertoire to help deal with
the unexpected, Identify problems, Inform improvement and + + +
SINCE 1881
Research & Teacher Teaching does involve creative thinking and
experimentation Individuals and professional groups need to know
what works and why Teacher’s actions lead to improved pupil
performance, increased motivation, commitment, better behavior
The profession as a whole needs access to a range of data/evidence types
These all need to be connected, and too often research is conducted in isolation of others
Teachers can adapt it to fit the individual needs of their own pupils
SINCE 1881
Research & Teacher Teachers are accountable - The public must have faith
in the profession – performance can be demonstrated through the publication of research findings
Teachers project their own personality upon learning experiences
Research give teachers the tools to analyze and make informed decisions about their practice
Research helps teachers to share with colleagues Invention and Innovation Research - future oriented and designed to benefit
learners rather than the researchers themselves Research is the duty of academic professionals

Problems of Research(er) Lack of a scientific training in the methodology Insufficient interaction between the Researchers
and business, government and research institutions Do not have the confidence that the material
supplied to researchers will not be misused Research studies overlapping one another are
undertaken quite often for want of adequate information
There does not exist a code of conduct for researchers and inter-university and interdepartmental rivalries
SINCE 1881
Problems of Research(er) Difficulty of adequate and timely secretarial
assistance Library management and functioning is not
satisfactory at many places Many of our libraries are not able to get copies of
old and new Acts/Rules, reports and other government publications in time
Difficulty of timely availability of published data from various government and other agencies
Problem of conceptualization and process of data collection and related things
SINCE 1881
