Cinematography & Camera Techniques

To open the title credits the first shot featured was an aerial shot showing where the movie is based; this is America. The next shot was a low angle of Ryan Goslings character which is faded in from the last shot. The next shot changes to an over the shoulder shot where we can see Ryan Gosling driving the car, this angle helps us see the protagonists facial expression, we can see he looks worried and nervous. The next shot was a point of view shot showing the road and also showing the protagonists reflection in the rear view mirror because we are seeing what he is. Another shot that was featured was a close up of the protagonist focusing on the road. The next shot was a zoom out shot showing what car the protagonist is driving and also to give us a hint of where he is going. After the zoom shot fades out, another close up at the same angle as before fades in. We next see a tracking shot of the protagonist’s car reaching his destination. We then see a tracking shot and an over the shoulder shot following the protagonist when we are introduced to another character that we are unaware of at the beginning of the film. We then see a point of view shot of the elevator closing and a girl walking away, this is shown because it is what the protagonist is seeing. Furthermore, we then see a long shot of the protagonist entering his flat. Another tracking shot is shown following the protagonist into his flat I think to create tension and make us think a bit more about this character. This then changes to a low angle shot to show what the character is doing and also to make him look like a big powerful character.

Visual Effects & Colour Scheme

The lighting used was low key; this is to show the viewers that the sequence was set at night time.

Genre Conventions Drive is an Action Thriller, I know this because the genre conventions including the music which is dramatic and is easy to identify as an action thriller. Also, the slow long shot changes make it evident which genre it falls in.

Narrative At the beginning we see an aerial shot to tell us that the film is set in America, we then are introduced to a male character who I then presume is the protagonist as he is every scene. All though we do not know his name or anything about his character as he doesn’t speak. Throughout the scenes we see him driving around America with no idea where he is going until he arrives at a block of flats but does not stay very long this suggests he is a very busy man. After this scene we then see him drive back around America again not knowing where he is going.

Editing Techniques Very few editing techniques were used but the ones I identified are cut aways to cut from scene to scene and another one I found was fading in and out to move on to another scene.

Title Credit Design The title credits used were easy to read in a bright pink colour. They were a simple font that looked like writing and was very clear to read with the dark scenes in the background.
