WHAT IS DROUGHT? A drought occurs when a geographical

area experiences an unusual shortage of water. It is associated with hot, dry conditions with little or no rainfall. As streams and rivers dry up plants and animals die due to lack of water.

CAUSES OF DROUGHT? Climate cycle change that can bring

about dry, hot conditions to an area which was once wet. The depletion of precipitation over time will cause regions around the world to slowly dry out

Global warming due to pollutants in the atmosphere.

Winds shift air masses and warm, dry, continental air moves over an area as opposed to cooler, moist, oceanic air masses which affects the ocean's water temperature 3

EFFECTS OF DROUGHT? Decreasing local water supply for drinking,

cooking etc. Negative effects on agriculture such as

reduced crop yields and milk production Famine and hunger-Drought conditions often

provide too little water to support food crops, through either natural precipitation or irrigation. The same problem affects grass and grain used to feed livestock and poultry. When drought undermines or destroys food sources, people go hungry. When the drought is severe and continues over a long period, famine may occur.

Increased soil erosion by wind Widespread bush fires Endangered animal life

A reduction in crop productivity usually results in less income for farmers, increased prices for food, unemployment, and migration. However, fortunate agricultural producers located outside the drought area benefit by selling their goods at higher prices.
