DU Video: Some IdeasJoseph Labrecque
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Current Situation• UCM produces 140+ videos every year – uncatalogued• Other departments also produce videos – some catalogued, some not• No central model - workflow for video is confusing • Everyone is doing something different• There is no official, supported “way” of doing anything• To be successful currently requires luck more than anything :)
Current Needs• Collect good data for the time of video request• Integrate this with a centralized video management system• Ability to brand videos upon playback in a unified fashion• Central spot to locate video that the public can access to promote the
good work done by the DU community• Make it SIMPLE for users to find video, edit video, and display video
Some Ideas• Central media management hub built upon ALORA’s bones• Metadata provided by video requests, ADR, other sources• Ability for DU users to easily locate, modify, and distribute video• Online video editor similar to the CourseMedia clip generator
– Ability to clip videos– Ability to sequence clips– Provide common video bumpers– Provide poster images– Provide transparent watermark overlays– Generate simple embed code to support all of this for the user
Future Tech• Flash Media Server to gain the ability to stream to iOS
– Current FMS supports standard HTTP streaming– Future FMS will support Apple-specific HTTP Streaming
• Flash Media Server to gain the ability to dynamically transcode media– Reduce the need for multiple versions of the same video file– Free up space on the servers and reduce redundancy/costs– Stream a truly optimized version of the video to any device
• Flash Media Server / Flash Player / AIR will support Google WebM in a set of future releases.
