Mission Statement

Page 4: E-rate: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Our goals are to enhance classroom instruction, increase student achievement, and promote college readiness as we build teachers', staff, and students' technology skills through the support and communication of the Technology Application TEKS. We can make an impact on student achievement in a positive manner by empowering the educational community to be effective, quality users of current and evolving technologies and to employ those technologies to create innovative learning environments. We know that teachers who are skilled users of technology are better at preparing their students to be self-directed explorers and communicators in a society where change is the only constant

The E-rate program provides discounts to receive voice, video, and data communications.

The amount of the discount depends on the level of poverty and location of the school or library receiving service.

The discount ranges from 20% to 90% of the cost of eligible services.

Elementary and secondary schools are eligible to receive discounts--including many private schools and religious schools.

Public libraries and library systems can receive E-rate discounts, provided they meet the eligibility requirements of libraries.

The U.S. False Claims Department investigated DISD E-rate procedures and found irregularities.

E-rate funds were denied beginning in 2004. A DISD Technology Associate Director was

sentenced to 14 years in prison for misappropriations of E-rate funds.

In 2009 DISD paid a $750,000 penalty for wrongful usage of E-rate Funds and $150 million dollars was withdrawn from our request for $391 million.

DISD was reinstated in 2009.

The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential. Steve Ballmer

E-rate funds promote communication. E-rate funds will improve our connectivity. Dallas ISD has been approved for E-rate

funds after a five year penalty. Dallas ISD must provide the resources for

software, professional development, digital technology and computer equipment.

Dealey has many technology needs. How can the mission of Dealey be

supported with technology?
