Present scenario of villages in India

• India presently inhabits worlds largest village population i.e more than 65% people in india stay in villages. Hence a lot of efforts need to be put in making these villages self –sufficient and developed rather than building up of urban concrete jungles.

• Eco villages are intentional communities whose goal is to become more socially, economically and ecologically sustainable .

Environment….

Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township in state of Tamil Nadu, India, near Pondicherry in South India. It was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa (also known as "The Mother") and designed by architect Roger Anger

population of about 2200 people, Out of which 836 are Indians and rest Having nationalities of over 43 countries.

• In the early 1970's Auroville's afforestation campaign began due to which ,over the next ten years, as part of a massive soil and water conservation programme, about a million trees including timber , banyan. ornamental plants, nut trees ,fruit and fodder trees etc. were planted here.

• At present major part of the afforested area is situated in a green belt around the future city area, forming a buffer zone to protect Auroville from intrusion by the rapidly expanding suburbs of Pondicherry.

• The Auroville Farm Group cover some 400 acres of cultivated land, managed by 35 Auroville residents.

• farmers work with different jobs including crop fields, vegetable gardening and dairy farming.

• traditional farming and modern agriculture simultaneously co- exist using eco-friendly technologies such as: water pumping windmills , solar energy, drip irrigation, micro sprinklers and methane gas collectors.

• In recent years, Auroville's waste problem has ballooned, due to increasing population and increased consumption In india .

• “EcoService” manages solid waste system that collects waste from households, communities, roads ,guest houses, restaurants and other building units .This is further sent to another team for processesing in sorting shed in Kottakarai.

• Waste is then either sold to recycling dealers, or landfilled at the Auroville landfill in an eco- friendly way.

Internal economyInternal economy• The Central Fund was started in 1989 to

collectively support Auroville's services and other collective responsibilities. Its income comes from:– Commercial units, which contribute a portion of

their annual surplus income – The Rs. 1500 scheme, under which each

Aurovilian contributes Rs. 1500 a month– Monthly contributions from guests and

guesthouses– Individual contributions from Aurovilians – A portion of returns on the deposits managed

by Auroville Maintenance Fund

Matrimandir

• the Matrimandir (Sanskrit for Temple of The Mother) is an edifice of spiritual significance for practitioners of Integral yoga, situated at the centre of Auroville. In shape of a Geodesic dome it is covered by golden discs that reflects sunlight .This contains the largest optically-perfect glass globe in the world.

Solar Bowl

• The Auroville Solar Kitchen is a collective kitchen for the Auroville community which provides the steam for cooking on all the sunny days of the year. Back-up steam, if needed, is provided by a diesel fired boiler.

• Throughout the year approximately 1000 lunches are prepared daily in the solar kitchen out of which 540 go to the schools kids, 200 go out by tiffins and about 260 to 300 are consumed in the dining hall everyday.

Regina’s Mud House

• The Auroville home of Regina and Robi is a charming mud house, built using the age-old wattle and daub technology.

• The whole house has been created using earth, sand and straw. At some places wooden finishing and supports are provided.

An unusual canvas

• As the house of an artist this structure is built mainly using canvas and bamboo sticks.

• The roof and five-foot-high exterior walls define the spaces inside the house. The space between the low walls and roof has no conventional window shutters or grills.

Some of the eco-friendly technologies that are being developed and extensively used in eco- houses

• a. allows terracotta to be reintroduced as tiles, but without needing any supporting wooden rafters as a substructure, wood being no more abundantly and affordably available.b. neither shuttering nor demoulding is required. Only a frame is required on either side.c. the village potter can be given employment thereby keeping most of the money in the immediate local area.d. transportation energy is reduced as bullock carts can be used.e. fast and modular process, as the units can be produced in advance and need to simply be assembled...f. hollows in the tubes ensure climatic comfort.

• Pedal-power within the city proper - Inside the outer ring road area, transport of people and goods would be by pedal-power (there will be a network of pleasant cycle and walking paths) and electric-powered vehicles: they would not overpower the streetscape because they are quiet and slow.

• Doctors, ambulances and other emergency transport could enter, of course, with any type of vehicle.
