Sure On This Shining NightSure on this shining nightOf star-made shadows round Kindness must watch for meThis side the ground The late year lies down the north, All is healed, all is health High summer holds the earth, Hearts all whole Sure on this shining nightI weep for wonder Wandr’ing far alone Of shadows on the stars. !James Agee (1909-1955) - “Description of Elysium”, from Permit Me Voyage, stanzas 6-8, 1934

Acquainted with the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night. I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain. I have outwalked the furthest city light. I have looked down the saddest city lane. I have passed by the watchman on his beat And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet When far away an interrupted cry Came over houses from another street, But not to call me back or say good-bye; And further still at an unearthly height, A luminary clock against the sky Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right. I have been one acquainted with the night.

Something in the darkness pulled me deeper Something in the madness eased my mind Was I awake or was I dreaming Cut the strings that bind me to mankind !Somewhere in between the moss and the stone The wind and the wood became my home I laid myself down upon the green When the ivy overgrew I could never leave !Something in the darkness pulled me deeper Something in the madness eased my mind Was I awake or was I dreaming Cut the strings that bind me to mankind !Something in the darkness pulled me deeper Something in the madness eased my mind Was I awake or was I dreaming Cut the strings that bind me to mankind

Once upon the dark autumn night I was so very far from sleep I longed to walk beneath the stars Into the wood so dark and deep !Neither myth nor fairy tale Could keep me from the path to the maze But eyes upon me I could feel Hidden in the shadows watching always !Something in the darkness pulled me deeper Something in the madness eased my mind Was I awake or was I dreaming Cut the strings that bind me to mankind !Once while I was sitting in my room One cold and silver winter's day I could hear another worldly call Try as I might I couldn't turn away
