DescriptionInfectious Diseases themes include increased emphasis on prevention, antibiotic resistance, new diagnostics and new treatments from chronic viral infections. Adult immunization recommendations now include near-universal influenza vaccination, and expanded use of zoster conjugated pneumococcal vaccine and Tdap boosters.Hepatitis C screening is now recommended for all patients age 30-65 independent of prior drug use histories. Similarly, treatment advances have increased the cure/response rates from 30% to 85-90%, while simultaneously simplifying treatment regimens.Sexually transmitted diseases are commonly seen in primary care practice and there have been major developments in diagnosis and treatment including management of cephalosporin-resistant gonococcal infections and the role of mycoplasma genitalium in clinical STD syndromes.Changes in influenza virus epidemiology, the new H979 virus, and new guidelines for rhinosinusitis this year have raised substantial concern on appropriate diagnosis, management and prevention. Since the course will be presented at the beginning of flu season, this will be an opportune time to review these materials.

Who Should AttendThis activity is intended for emergency medicine physicians, family practitioners, internists, public health practitioners, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

ObjectivesAfter attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:• Describe the new drugs and strategies for the treatment of hepatitis C

infection and when to refer to a specialist for management• Implement in practice the adult vaccine strategies proposed by the

Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices• Describe the current epidemiology of influenza, the current

understanding of vaccine efficacy and treatment strategies• Describe the changing epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections

and how screening and treatment strategies can be implemented in practice.
