Is it a Late Start ?Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
Iraq has only recently got involved in the EMME project. The capacity building and time scheduling tasks to create the Iraqi team wasn’t an easy job given the everyday difficulties there and how circumstances sometimes influence performance one way or another. Such circumstances held Dr. Emad Alheety from being here with us today with all the project documents he worked on and the discussion points he prepared

Late start ?Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
The research team supervising the implementation of the project and the coordination of contributions from various Iraqi seismologists and engineers from universities, research centres and observatories is focusing on ways to best cover as many work packages as possible over the next two years.

To override the logistical and communication difficulties we decided to use a two tier project management structure to best achieve the goals and objectives. Other potential members might be added

Current Objectives
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
As we are in the initial stage of signing the contract documents based on compiled proposal, extended discussions and project ideas were brought forward for discussion among the EMME-Iraq team.
Following the initial decision last November to keep our contribution within WP-1 scope of work, we strongly believe we could bring more deliverables to other work packages if we can tailor the project time constraints to allow some flexibility of partial or full involvement

Possible Contributions1. WP1 Earthquake Catalogue
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
The team has already achieved progress on this work package and a seismicity catalogue was submitted to the WP1

Available Resources
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
Between November 2010 and now, the EMME-Iraq team has put some effort on building up its resource base by looking back at all available sources of information that we can utilize to better fulfil the requirements of the EMME. That includes both Historical and Recent seismicity information
EMME Mid-Term Assembly, Amman, March 31-April 2, 2011

Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
The Historical seismicity of Iraq has already been extensively studied and documented and a number of references can provide the necessary accurate information

Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
As for recent seismicity, we are in the process of coordinating efforts to extract as much information as we can from records and reports compiled by seismologists in Iraq using data from either the Iraqi seismological network or other local networks installed and operated for specific projects in the region. This could enhance our catalogue (if events within the requirements of the catalogue could be identified and checked)

Although the team has already submitted a compiled catalogue, We are currently in the process of further elaborating on the details of that catalogue and incorporating additional data

The team would like to retouch on the seismicity catalogue by incorporating recently recorded local seismicity data from observatories in the north plus aftershock investigations of previous perceptible and damaging earthquakes in Iraq which could add very useful pieces to the puzzle

Basically, the time frame given for this work package requires extensive efforts to get the input needed to meet deadlines set. We would like to further discuss this specific component and how we can best get the information compiled and submitted to add to the overall picture. We sincerely feel we could possibly fill some gaps here

We are also trying to get the Iraqi Geological Survey and couple of prominent geologists to contribute to the active faulting database if we ever had this project component covered. We know that some of the data is already there but accessing it is something that needs to be addressed

Published research addressed seismic hazard and seismic risk in Iraq and a number of maps and figures got published over the past few decades. What we hope to achieve is to look back at the data, verify input information and properly touch on all possible elements whether it be geological data, paleoseismic information, .. etc

Candidate cities for the City Scenario
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
Based on discussions over the past couple of months regarding the possibility of contributing to WP5, we came to consider various elements related to the different cities. Regretfully, Bahghdad won’t be the best one to start with for known reasons!

Candidate No.1 - Mosul
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
Being the second largest city with seismic activity, unique geological setting, many historical sites and major dam nearby

Candidate No.2 – Erbil or Sulaimaniya
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
Both in Northern Iraq close to moderate seismic activity and dense faulting systems and currently going through immense urban development

MESF Role
Iraq’s Contribution to the EMME Project
To facilitate communication and data exchange as well as resource provision, the Middle East Seismological Forum created a drop box portal like information exchange system to pool all necessary documents and data giving the team a facility for fast access and effective exchange of information
