The purpose of an essay is to convince the reader of your point of view, of your opinion.

What is your purpose in this essay? What are you trying to make the reader believe?

Introduction: What are you going to be arguing (Thesis)

Body: Facts, personal stories, textual evidence, historical examples, and current events to support your argument (must have three– each one corresponding with a different body paragraph)

Make sure to address the other side, and then explain why your opinion is more accurate!

Conclusion: Restate your central idea (what you are arguing- your opinion) and summarize your facts.

+Creating Your Thesis

Your journal entry can be condensed (shortened, tightened) into your thesis.

1 minutes silent work: create a one sentence thesis stating what you believe to be the most important quality in a leader and WHY.

Hook: Interesting fact, quotation, humor, curiosity, definition, or anecdotes

Details: A few details about the idea of leadership

Thesis: Your main argument statement boiled down

+Introduction

Take 5 SILENT minutes to brainstorm. At the end of five minutes you need to have:

A completed thesis (one sentence statement of your opinion)

Three FACTS that support your thesis (you may want to think about personal examples, leaders from history or modern day, or books you have read)

In the next five minutes, silently produce an introductory paragraph with:

A Hook: an engaging sentence that will grab your reader (remember, possible hook strategies include: Interesting fact, quotation, humor, curiosity, definition, or anecdotes)

Your three facts are going to become body paragraphs

Each body paragraph should contain:

An introductory sentence connecting your fact to your thesis

Details about your fact

A concluding sentence that connects your fact back to the thesis.

You have fifteen minutes to begin writing your body paragraphs, then we will check back in. Body paragraphs need to be a minimum of five sentences.

+Addressing

Counterarguments

Take two minutes to create an argument that someone who does not agree with your opinion would make.

Take two minutes to address that argument: “Some might say that…”

+Conclusion

A conclusion briefly summarizes what you have written in your body paragraphs and makes sure to tie everything back to your overarching thesis.

I would address possible counterarguments at the beginning of the conclusion as a gateway to reiterating your three main arguments.

End with a line that the reader will keep in mind.
