English Corner Online
English Corner - from Wikipedia
The phrase ‘English Corner’ commonly applies to
informal periods of instruction in English held at
schools and colleges in China…
The emphasis in these sessions is on improving the
oral English skills of the participants…
As an informal session the topics can be far ranging.
Usually English Corner activities are held on Friday
afternoons.
English Corner Online – the Mission
Use the Internet to provide learners of
English with a tool to help them practise
speaking outside the classroom.

Some ideas and suggestions
1. Getting started
Ask students to register. Give them a quiz task where they
have to search within ECO to find answers to questions and
in the process, discover the different sections and
functionality of the site. This could be done in class or for
homework.
2. Publishing work for public view
Students post their contribution to a collection, for example
of short stories, poems, recipes, jokes, etc.

3. Interviews (with students in different schools or countries)
Set a topic e.g. music, food, routine, technology, lifestyle, etc.
Students produce a questionnaire then set up and conduct
interviews with students elsewhere.
Once the interviews have been completed, students write up
their findings and post them in the ECO "writing" section.
Material posted could also be exploited by classes not actually
involved in the production process. For example: "Read the
posts and compare the comments with the situation in your own
school/country".

4. Chain Stories (within a class or school, or between
different classes and schools)
Set a theme or provide a title (for example: "The Future" or
"Jan's Bad Day"). Brainstorm different starting points. In pairs
students start a story then "hand it over". The next pair of
students write the middle of a story, and then a third pair write
the end of a story. Stories could be completed in one session
or continue indefinitely.
Story writing could also be done individually and set for
homework on a regular basis.
