Curriculum Vitae (CV) Used in other countries around the world and to apply for academic and executive positions in the U.S.

Multiple pages with more in-depth information, including research, conferences and presentations

Photo, citizenship, marital status, etc. are common abroad

Resume Basics/Format/Layout

Basics: Print on quality resume paper – white, ivory or gray Avoid using templates

Emphasize the most important items and weed out irrelevant details

NEVER falsify or exaggerate your credentials

No first-person wording (I, my, we)

Format: Set margins at .5 – 1.0 all around will keep content centered in the page

Easy to read font – Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman are commonly used. All font should be the same size (10-11), except for your name which can be larger (16+) and in bold

Use format elements (bullets, bold, underline, italics) sparingly. These can be used to highlight important information, but not throughout the entire document

Tailoring the ResumeUtilize a job description to pull out keywords Employers are more likely to pursue your application if your experience, skills and abilities match the job requirements

Sample description with highlighted keywords to include when tailoring the resume:

Resume Mistakes Do not include references on your resume. References should be a separate document. “References available on request” is outdated. Not proofreading or having others read for errors Using first-person references in work and project experience Not including information requested in the job application Printing two-page resume front and back Not formatting resume within an ATS

Conclusion First impression you make with a company – make sure it is a positive

impression Nothing disqualifies a candidate faster than a poorly written resume Your resume is a marketing tool to sell your best traits
