An assessment rubric is a matrix, grid or cross-

tabulation employed with the intention of making

expert judgments of student work both more

systematic and more transparent to students.

A rubric saves time and decreases subjectivity of

teachers.

What?What?

Page 3: Essay Assessment Rubrics

Essay rubrics are used as a fantastic learning tool for

students learning how to structure an essay topic.

Essay rubrics are effective ways to grade essays, end

confusion and help students to write better.

Essay rubrics make grading an easier task to

accomplish, allowing a grader to use an evenhanded

approach in grading and allowing students to

know what will be expected of their essays.

What?What?

Page 4: Essay Assessment Rubrics

How?How?1. Create a list of main points to be graded

that should be covered in the essay.

These will often consist of: thesis and

argument, organization, paragraphs,

style or voice and grammar, spelling and

punctuation. You can also add an overall

impression category.

Page 5: Essay Assessment Rubrics

How?How?2. Write out each of the headings from Step

1 on the left-hand side of the rubric.

Underneath each heading list the factors

expected of each heading. For example

for organization a description would

read, "Clear organization that supports

the main thesis and creates an even flow

of ideas. The organization bolsters the

main argument. The paragraphs flow

smoothly."

How?How?3. Write a grading system to the right of

each heading. The grading will often be

based on the letters A, B, C and D. The

grading system can also be assessed with

points one through five, one representing

weak essay elements and five

representing strong writing skills.

How?How?4. Create a space at the bottom of the rubric

entitled "Total" to reflect the essay's

overall quality and grade. Also leave

space at the bottom of the rubric for

overall comments on the essay.

The use of grading rubrics helps the students:

to meet or even exceed expectations of the

assignment,

to view the grading process as being “fair”,

and to set goals for future learning.

Why?Why?

Page 11: Essay Assessment Rubrics

The use of rubrics decreases the likelihood that

students will dispute the grade they receive.

The transparency of the expectations helps students

to know exactly why they lost (or can lose) points of

the assignment and aids them in setting goals for

future improvement.
