EVALUATION QUESTION 2How does the media product represent social groups?

Stereotypes• My final product, a pop magazine, fits in with the

stereotype of a the “pop” genre. The colours used throughout the magazine, as the house style, are orange, pink and white, stereotypically girly colours, which tend to be used in pop due to the target audience of girls.

• The girls I have used on the cover are wearing the same “girly” colours as the magazine and are natural girls appealing to the audience unlike if my product was a rock magazine, the girl I would use would be wearing dark makeup to fit the stereotypical “rock” genre.

Gender• The primary audience are female so I needed to find ways to

appeal to them.• Typically, on the cover of a pop magazine there can either be a

girl, which exploits Naomi Wolf’s theory (having attractive females on the cover of the magazine makes them by it as it makes them believe if they buy the magazine they can be like the girl on the cover,) or a boy/boy band as this attracts the female audience to buy the magazine.

• The use of stereotypical girly colours also appeals to the target audience of teenage girls.

• The feature band are also a girl band who are successful and ‘making it’ in a business that is dominated by males, this is aspirational for the audience.

Age• I also had to look at the age range of my target audience

which is between 14 – 17, the average being 16. • To help appeal to the audience I looked at magazines

such as “Q” for the older part of my audience and then magazines such as “We Love Pop” for the younger part and took inspiration from both for the layout, colours and style.

• I also included stories for all readers, such as “Boy band Flashback” would be for the older reader who knows more about older bands, while the Ariana Grande competition would be for the younger audience as she appeals more to them.

Social Class• I have priced my magazine at £2.00, coming out

fortnightly making it quite affordable for all classes and not too much for people to purchase. For example, if it came out weekly it could be to pricey as the buyer would have to pay £2.00 per week.

• The band featured are also presented as skilled working class, appealing to the audience who would be coming from a working class to a lower middle class background (Grade C1/C2). They are also wearing the type of clothes the audience would wear and seem to be “regular” girls, appealing to the audience as they can relate to them.
