Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

Page 2: Evaluation question 2

We were set a task which was to create a short film that would last approximately five minutes

Alongside this, we also had to undertake a ancillary task and we had to create a film review and poster that will help promote our short film.

Assignment Task Brief

The main objective of the ancillary task was to promote the main product. By creating a poster and film review, I would be attract my target audience into my short film. At first I thought this would be a hard task, as I never produced a film review and would find that part a bit challenging.

My main purpose of the task was to attract my target audience from a sheet of A4 paper, whether it being a film poster or review. It needed to be creative and original but sticking to the codes and conventions of the short film.

What was the main objective of our ancillary task?

How does my Poster relate to my target audience and the action/comedy genre?

When creating this poster, I had to keep in mind my age range of 12-35 and decided that it would look better to showcase the protagonists of the film. I chose to do this as my target audience would want to focus on the main characters and would hit conventions of the genre.

The tagline ‘Are You Ready For War’, indicates violence and danger. This helps link my film to the action part of this hybrid genre. However the way it is laid out, it shows a comedic side.

The facial expression in both characters shows that they are serious are ready to battle as they posed with guns.

Image used in my poster

The image I used for my poster shows both protagonists preparing for a battle with a sense of seriousness in their facial expressions. I decided to use the upper half of their body because it shows more such as their costume, war paint and weapons. The background of the picture fixed well as it was taken in a house and most of our film is taken place in a house.

How did the film review explore my main product?

When designing my film review, I decided to put on it on one page to keep it simple and easy to follow for the audience. I went with the colours black and grey and thought they contrasted well together. I decided to make it basic and not use bright colours.

I used a convention that is used in film reviews and that was the ‘’Verdict’’ section. As it is bigger then the rest of the text, it shows a brief summary of what the writer thought and gives the reader an idea on what to expect from the film.

The review gives the film 4 our of 5 stars which means that the film is great and will be enjoyable. Since is with the verdict section it emphasizes the greatness of film and would be a good watch.

Image used in my film review

I chose to use this picture for my film as I believe that it will create suspense for the reader and they will be interested as to what they are looking at. However I did not want to use a battle scene picture as it will give away and the target audience wouldn’t focus on the film as a whole.

Influences

Hot Fuzz (2007) was my influences for my poster as I wanted to recreate some of the codes and conventions of the action comedy genre. The use of having the main protagonists and having them focused makes them more powerful and dramatic. We however went against the action comedy genre as our protagonists are female and are typically male.

In conclusion, I believe that both my film review and poster correlated with my main product successfully and does a good job to promote my product. The colours I used in both my film review and poster worked well. I also believe the poster especially helps create verisimilitude which is important for a action/comedy genre. I believe I have created successful products in order for it to promote my main product.
