Q3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

In order to find out what people thought of our music video and their personal opinions on it, we created a short

questionnaire that would enable us to gather their thoughts and ideas.

the following is a few of the questions and their responses

Page 2: Evaluation Question 3

WHAT GENRE IS THE MUSIC VIDEO BEST SUITED TO?

Since the genre we had chosen was indie/alternative we of course wanted to make sure that the video we produced

was appropriate to that genre, this question enabled us to see whether we used our research effectively and used

the right techniques and ideas to make it either conform to, challenge or develop

the genre. 100% of the people that answered our survey said that the video we made was best suited to the genre of indie/alternative, proving that what we created was definitely something that

would be identified as a product of that genre, showing that we must have used

the common conventions of the genre in the correct way.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE MUSIC VIDEO EITHER CONFORM TO, CHALLENGE OR DEVELOP THE

GIVEN GENRE?

In order to make sure that the video was identifiable as a video of the indie/alternative genre, we wanted to make sure that we used conventions that are often found in other videos of the same genre, such as things like a storyline or minimal lip syncing. This question meant that we could see if what we had included was

noticed by the audience, one person said “dark settings, character not looking direct at camera, casual clothing”, through doing research into other videos, we found that these were common factors and thought

it would be appropriate to use similar features in our video, from this it shows that it was noticed and expected. Another person said “Simplistic yet meaningful, was also quite alternative - the dancing etc made

it very unique”, our research showed us that indie videos are often on a tight budget so this means that they are kept quite simple and include other things to make them more effective, we thought to break the video up that it would be beneficial to include contemporary dance, this is a factor that challenges or even develops the genre as it is very rare to see this within videos of this genre and by using it, it obviously made

a positive impact on the audience.

WHICH ASPECTS/FEATURES OF THE VIDEO DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

If our video wasn’t portrayed as enjoyable or interesting then people wouldn’t watch so we wanted to ensure that it included certain elements that would make it worth watching. Our

narrative that we included was the basis of the video, it followed the story of a boy who had an argument with someone, who’s identity is hidden, and the fact that he feels guilty and wants to

fix his mistakes, within the video we included hints to who the person was and it was his mother. 80% of the people who responded said that their favourite element was the narrative and as

producers of the video we are very happy with this as we intended it to be the feature that had the biggest impact and was payed attention to the most.

40% of people said that both the dance element and the song choice was the feature that they

enjoyed most, we felt that by including dancing scenes that it would help to both break up the video and also progress it, the scenes were in

black and white and we thought that this would help to portray the characters emotions in a

different and more physical way, challenging the genre. From the results it shows that even though

it wasn't peoples favourite aspect, that it was something that had a positive impact.

USING GOODWIN’S THEORY, WHICH OF THE BELOW ARE ACHIEVED IN THE MUSIC VIDEO?

Goodwin’s Theory is a technique of analysis that we used throughout our research into other videos of the same genre, it enabled us to see that way in which music videos are put together in order to have the best

impact on the people who are watching them. To give our video purpose we used attempted to use the categories in the best way possible.

The category that was noticed the most within our video was ‘Genre Conventions’ with 100% of people

saying that it was achieved in the video. The conventions of the indie/alternative genre are often

things like narratives based on love/relationships, very simplistic ideas and emotional scenes. From the

feedback it is clear that what we included within our video was effective and portrayed the genre in the right

way. 80% of people said that ‘Relationships between lyrics

and visuals’ was the next most popular category that was achieved in the video, showing that we made a

connection between what the artist was saying in his lyrics and what he meant by them, the title of the song,

‘For Your Love’, is dominant in the video as the boy realises that he has done wrong and is willing to fix his mistakes and do anything for his mothers ‘love’ again.

HOW DID THE MUSIC VIDEO MAKE YOU FEEL?

By looking into other videos of the same genre, we found that the majority of them had an impact on the viewer and that often there was a powerful message within the video. We wanted to make sure that our video

told a story, hence why we had a strong and prominent narrative behind it, but we also wanted to enable people to connect with it in ways that may not be as obvious, in ways that only they knew.

The most common way that people felt after watching our video was emotional as 80% selected this option. The song itself and

the lyrics that are spoken would easily make it a song that people can connect with and understand, and along with our video and the story that it tells of the love between a mother

and son would make it even more effective. 60% of people said it was a relatable video, meaning that they understood what was

happening and could relate to the situation that was being shown. 40% said it made them feel sad and upset, since the

video starts with an argument it is understandable that people would feel this way as they aren't good situations to be in,

although 40% said it was upsetting, 20% said that they felt positive after watching the video and this could be because of

the way that the son notices his mistakes and returns to fix them, showing the audience that things always work out for the

best in the end, giving them hope for the worst situations.
