An expository essay explains or analyzes a topic.

Expository essays can describe personal experiences, as well. For example, you might describe the impact of music on your life.

Your expository essay will include several paragraphs:

Introduction

supporting paragraphs (body)

conclusion

Introduction:

Consists of a topic sentence and a thesis statement.

The topic sentence will introduce the topic of your essay.

The thesis statement is the main idea that controls your essay.

Supporting Paragraphs (body):

Develop your thesis with relevant details.

These details may include: facts, examples, and quotations.

Conclusion:

Restates the topic and thesis from the introduction in a different way. Choose synonyms and different sentence structure to restate the topic and your thesis. This will avoid repetition.
