CHAPTER 2:LOOKING AT COMPUTERS

What is a computer and who designed the first computer? A computer is a data processing device that performs four major functions: input, process, output, and storage. The

first computer known as a ENIAC was designed by a physicist named John William Mauchly and a man named

John Adam Presper "Pres" Eckert Jr. John was an American Electrical engineer. What gave this to incredible guys the idea to create such an outstanding device that would later change the world? Presper was a student who became a

teacher because he was interested in engineering and he began to design his first digital computer out of vacuum

tubes. So why is this so important? This is where the world changed in a technology sense. History is very important

just like the history of a computer.

Input and output is when the computer exchanges information with the outside world. For example when

someone is typing information into a computer that’s input but when a person is sending a email that’s called output

information. Data is when information is stored by the computer. Something interesting that I learned was that

computers have languages too; there called binary language. Binary language a numeric system that only uses

two digits which are one and zero. In computers when it comes to binary they process data and calculate numbers

using one and zero. What is a byte in a computer? A byte is a unit of measurement to measure data, a byte also made of eight binary bites. These bites can only consists of ones

and zeros. Monitors help the user interact using the keyboard or mouse. Also the monitor opens up programs for the user to explore. A hard drive is different from the random access memory, the hard drive actually stores the files and documents which is the data. The hard drive is

small but can hold over a 100 GB if possible.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF A COMPUTER?

R.A.M: Random access memory.

What does the random access memory do? The random access memory holds the data, operating system, and the application programs as long as the computer is running.

When the computer shuts down the data in R.A.M is destroyed or disappears. R.O.M is the compete opposite from R.A.M, R.O.M is a permanent type of memory. Its responsible for hosing institutions to help start up a

computer.

Conclusion

Computers had a great impact on the world during war world II. Computers came along way from since then and they have helped the world connect with people all across the world. We should thank people like philosophers, inventors, engineers, mathematics, and scholars for taking the

time out to figure out ways how to improve technology. With their help and with constantly learning ways to improve more we have the best ways to get things done, like homework. Before there where digital computers we had calculating machines that helped the veterans connect with

different countries. These machines helped evolve into the computers we use today to communicate with family, jobs, and other important duties. As an individual computers helped me

in some many ways like signing up for opportunities to win scholarships. Technology has come along way and it doesn’t stop here. Where would we be without computers.
