The Birth Of Cinema

The history of film began in the 1890s, with the invention of the first motion picture cameras and the establishment of the first film production companies and cinemas.

Films in the 1890s were always under a minute long, cameras were stood in one place and just recorded what was going on, there was no editing or any other type of shots used. And until 1927 motion pictures were produced without sound.

Thomas EdisonWhat Does He Have To Do With Film?

Thomas Edison developed many devices that influenced life around the world including the phonograph, the motion picture camera.

Thomas Edison invented the Kinetoscope which is a early motion picture exhibition device. It was designed for short films to be shown to one individual at a time through a peephole. The Kinetoscope was not a movie projector, it became the standard for all cinematic projection, by creating the illusion of movement by showing a strip of film.

The Lumière Brother’s

The Lumière brothers were two brothers called Auguste and Louis Lumière. They were the first filmmakers in history and they patented the cinematograph. Their first film, Sortie de l'usine Lumière de Lyon, shot in 1894 was the first true motion picture.

TechnologyThe movie camera was invented in the late 1880s. Motion pictures were initially made novelty and developed into one of the most important tools of entertainment in the 20th century. Most films before 1930 were silent and the camera never moved, there was no editing and no cutting, also they would record anything they could as film reels were only a few minutes long. They would record anything from someone reading a newspaper to a busy street in the middle of the day.

By the late 1890s, the first motion picture companies were established in the US, France and Britain.

Dr. Daniel Comstock, and mechanic W. Burton Wescott developed the subtractive colour system for Technicolor. This system used a beam splitter in a modified camera to send red and green light waves to separate black-and-white film negatives. This changed the world of film as every single film then used this method and made film what it is today.
