BASICS OF KNITTING

KNITIt means making (a garment or other item) by interlocking loops of yarn with knitting needles or on a machine.

Knitted fabric may be described as structures produced by the interloping of yarn.

KNITTED FABRIC

LOOP & INTERLOPING

LOOPA structure, series or process, the end of which is connected to the beginning.Loop is the fundamental unit formed by the banding of yarn into a “Ω” shape.

INTERLOPINGTo loop together to form a knitted fabric.

INTERLOCK

When loops are locked or joined together.

STITCHES

The smallest fundamental unit in a knitted fabric. Stitches are produced by a knitted loop pulled

through a previously formed a loop.

a) PLAIN STICH:The basic knitting stitch

which is also known as knit stitch.

b) PURL STITCH:The stitch is actually reverse

of the plain.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF STITCHES

c) MISS STITCH: A miss is created when one or more knitting needles are deactivated and do not move into position to accept yarn

d) TUCK STITCH: is formed when a knitting needle holds its old loop and then receive new yarn, two loops will then collect in one needle hook.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF STITCHES

e) TRANSFER STITCH: A transfer is formed when loops transfer from one needle to another during the knitting cycle to form a hole or lace design.

Horizontal rows of stitches are called course.

Course run widthwise like as weft in woven.

WEFT KNITWEFT KNIT

There are two main types of knit:

WEFT KNITS WARP KNITS

The system of producing a fabric through the interlocking of loops in widthwise direction.

WARP KNITThe system of producing fabric through the interlocking of loops in lengthwise direction.

the length of the fabricThe loops are produced to

the width of the fabric

At least one yarn is required for each needle to make each stitch in a

course

All stitches in a course are made by one yarn

Suitable to dry wash. Suitable to hand washLess popular More popular

CIRCULAR KNITTING VS FLAT BED KNITTING

CIRCULAR KNITTING FLAT BED KNITTINGMade with a machine that knits the fabric in a continuous circle.

Made with a machine that knits the fabric in sheets.

The weight of fabric is light The weight of fabric is heavier. The fabric is thin. The fabric is thick12 to 22 gauge machine is used

2 to 10 gauge machine is used

Example:T- Shirt, Socks, Gloves

Example:Sweater, Heavy Jacket

Two Types of machine are used,a) Small Dia: Socks, Glovesb) Big Dia: T-Shirt, Polo Shirt

Usually for Sweater

Usually for rib collar, jacquard knit etc.

TRICOT WARP KNITTING VSRASCHEL WARP KNITTING

TRICOT WARP KNITTING

RASCHEL WARP KNITTING

Bearded needle is used. Latch needle is used.Gauge is expressed in needles per inch.

Gauge is expressed in needles per 2 inch.

Fine filament yarn is used. Different types of needle is used.

Also called single knit Have all loops drawn to one side of the fabric (all

plain stitches). Most easily recognized by the face because the

smooth side is the face.

JERSEY KNIT FABRIC

Made with alternate wale of plain and purl stitch on both side of the fabric

RIB KNIT FABRIC RIB KNIT FABRIC

Made with alternate course of plain and purl stitches on both side of the fabric.

PURL KNIT FABRIC

USES OF KNITTED FABRICS

WEFT KNITS• T-shirts• Jumpers• Cardigans• Sweatshirt fabrics

WARP KNITS• Net curtains• Swimwear• Terry towelling fabrics• Patterned tights• Lace fabrics

DESIGN BY CONSTRUCTION OF FABRIC

Based on controlling knitting needle. Example:Plain, purl, miss, tuck, transfer stitches

TUCK STITCH LA-COSTE FABRIC

TRANSFER STITCH POINTELLE FABRIC

WHY HEAVY KNIT FABRIC IS CALLED FULLY FASHIONED KNIT ?

Heavy Knit fabric is called fully fashioned knit because

i. Fabricii. Sizeiii. Patterniv. Design of the fabric is made under one

machine.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

Bonded FabricFoam Laminated FabricNon-woven FabricFeltEmbroideryLace Fabric

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

• BONDED FABRIC Made from two fabrics Have been adhered together.

• FOAM LAMINATED FABRIC Consist of three layers adhered together a face middle

foam and a backing a fabric Also called sandwich laminates.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

• NON-WOVEN FABRIC Textile materials made directly

from fibers Held together as a fabric by heat

fusion, entanglement or adhesive.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

Non-woven fabric are two types:

Durable non-woven fabric.Non-durable/ disposable woven fabric.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

Durable Non-Woven Fabric:Not confine in a single or limited number

of the application. Example:Shopping Bag

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

Non-durable/ Disposable Woven Fabric:

Has a single or limited number of the application.

Example:Disposable Mask.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

FELT: A non-woven fabric is made

directly from fiber. Probably the oldest known

textile.

OTHER TYPES OF FABRIC

EMBROIDERY: An art on woven fabric and knit.

• LACE FABRIC: Consist of a decorative design

created with thread or yarn on a net-like open background.

KNIT VS WOVENKNIT NATURE: WOVEN

Single set of yarn either warps or weft interlock

together.

Construction Two sets of yarn interlace each other at right angle.
