More about Mermaids… A mermaid is a mythical creature that is half

woman and half fish. The name comes from 'mer' meaning sea. The

male version is called a merman. Although some mermaids are described as

monstrous and ugly, they are more usually very beautiful.

Above the waist they appear as a lovely young woman, whilst from the waist down, they are like a fish with fins and a spreading tail.

What are Myths & Legends?

A legend is a semi-true story, which has been passed on from person-to-person and has important meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historic facts, but with 'mythical qualities'. Legends usually involve heroic characters or fantastic places and often encompass the spiritual beliefs of the culture in which they originate .

A myth is a story based on tradition or legend, which has a deep symbolic meaning. A myth 'conveys a truth' to those who tell it and hear it, rather than necessarily recording a true event. Although some myths can be accounts of actual events, they have become transformed by symbolic meaning or shifted in time or place.

How are they different from written stories with an oral tradition?

The seeds of a mythic story run deep.  Myths were before art was, before language or the

written word Myths sprung up before religion The great mythic themes were known before literature.

All great works of literature are based upon mythic themes or stories.

Myths and mythic symbols are the elementary particles of imagination and creativity.

Myth is before philosophy and science. There is no better way to understand a culture deeply than

to know and appreciate its mythos, its stories, its dreams.

How do the traits of a legendary hero exemplify the values of the culture from which the legend originated?

.

• A mystical, mythical, or legendary creature is a creaturefrom mythology or folklore (often known as "fabulous creatures" in historical literature). • Mythical creatures have been part of human culture throughout the ages and across all parts of the world. • Mermaids are from the legend of being so attached to a fish that it became a part of its body. • Mythical creatures are in themselves beyond normal reality, often composites of existing animals or animals and humans. • According to the definition, a heroic creature is one who embodies the values of their society.

In what ways do myths illustrate the beliefs system and customs of the culture that create them? Today people still believe in inanimate objects, spirits, gods, angels, ghosts, alien UFOs, without ever questioning the reliability of their sources. Belief and faith can overpower the mind of a

person to such an extent that even in the teeth of contrary evidence, he will continue to believe in it for no other reason than others around him believe in it or that people have believed in it for centuries.

Mythology is all around us, have you seen it?

Mythology can refer to the collected myths of a group of people—their body of stories which they tell to explain nature, history, and

customs. As a collection of such stories, mythology is a vital feature of every

culture and is all around us. A culture's collective mythology helps convey belonging, shared and

religious experience, behavioral models, and moral and practical lessons.

The study of myth, mythology dates back to antiquity.

Legends and myths give us clues about the cultural values and beliefs of the people who originally created them and their

presence is indeed all around us!

Mythology makes other people interesting, the bearers of more fascinating stories to listen to around the campfire of dazzlingly bright colors, languages and customs.  Lovers of myth have many books to read, and all of them are

entertaining, if not wondrously enlightening.  I personally would feel poorer if I only had one book to read, only one lake to dip my toes into and to drink from only one church, temple or mosque that was the handwork of God..
