The Development of NKI Internet College – 5 ’Generations’ 1987 - 1994:
1. Generation – based on the ’EKKO’ conferencing system
1994 - 1995: 2. Generation – ’The Open Electronic College’: Philosophy: Constructing a system as
’open’ as possible in relation to external networks and services, based on the Internet, e-mail and Listserv conferencing system
1996 - 2000: 3. Generation – ’from small scale to large scale’ and permanent operation based on the
WWW
2001 - 2007: 4. Generation – Introduction of a fully integrated system for development and administration

2007 - 5. Generation – New technological platform that opens for new services and continuous
exchange of data between the LMS and Student Administrative System (STAS)
Systems Integration for Optimal Student Support Solutions
NKI basic philosophies concerning distance learning
Student autonomy and flexibility “NKI Distance Education aims to offer distance education solutions
that make the students attain their learning objectives through optimum individual flexibility where the students shall represent resources for each other without being dependent on each other.”
Social software
Student presentations Student lists with information Software solutions for inviting and accepting partners and establish
connections
Learning in cooperative freedom
Learning can be individual, cooperative or collaborative
Individual learning provides maximum flexibility and minimum social support
Cooperative learning provides much flexibility and access to a learning community
Collaborative learning provides minimum flexibility and requires involvement and participation in the learning community
Measures to stimulate cooperative learning
In the LMS: The Planning system The Student Presentation and Information system (CLIP) The Learning Partner solutions The Forum solutions The Cooperative Documents solutions – work on common
documents
In the courses: Forums integrated with the learning materials Cognitive gating assignments (COGs) Cooperative assignments

and course pages have been examined and tested concerning universal accessibility
Talking web pages
Presentations and Learning Partner
Statistics April 2008:
Mobile learning in online distance education
4 EU-projects from 2001-2008 – main aim to increase services and add flexibility to online learning1. From e-learning to m-learning (2000-2003)
2. Mobile learning – the next generation of learning (2003-2005)
3. Incorporating mobile learning into mainstream education (2005-2007)
4. The role of mobile learning in European education (2006-2008)
Mobile learning and statistics
The CEO of Ericsson, Carl-Heinric Sandberg, announced a short time ago that the number of mobile subscriptions in the world had reached 3.300.000.000. This is for a world population of about 6.5 billion.
This means there is a wireless device for every 2 persons in the world, including all ages, the poorest and also developing countries.
Mobile learning and distance education
Technology:
There is an old truth in distance education research which states that ‘it is not technologies with inherent pedagogical qualities that triumph in distance education but technologies which are generally available to citizens’.
If this is true there has never been a technology as available to citizens as mobile telephony. The figure is now 3.3 billion and rising rapidly.
Distance education cannot disregard mobile technologies.
Mobile learning in online distance education

learner’ Increase the level of universal accessibility
Mobile learning in online distance education
