Let’s talk a bit about the fauna of Maurice.

THE DODO!!!

Here you can see the coat of arms of Maurice. On the left there is a Dodo. The Dodo is the characteristic symbol of Maurice.

The name Dodo means stupid. People say they got extingt because they were so kind and good that people would catch them and kill them easily.

OTHER ANIMALS OF MAURICEThese animal is a lemur, you can find them in Maurice. They are ususally wild animals but people sometimes have them at home as pets.

This is a bobcat, it’s a mammal. It’s a specie of cats. Bobcats are of the same family of tigers, lions, etc…

This is a giant turtle, you can find them in Maurice, they are the biggest spiecies of turtles ever seen. They have got a very large neck, too big even for their huge body.

There are lots of other spicies and animals in Maurice like for example:

Crocodiles.They are quite funy, because they have their mouth open all the time. When they catch their dam, they close it to be able to eat it.

Hippos.Gloria, of the movie Pinguins of Madagascar is one of them. They are very big animals and have big teeth. You can also find them by the water.

INSECTSThere are still 30 million insects that are not classified. There are lots of different kinds of insects in Maurice, and very beautiful ones:

Grasshoppers.We usually see Green grasshoppers, but there are also very beautiful ones. They can be blue, light Green, orange, yellow, etc…

Le Meridien.This name is a French one, as you know, in Maurice, they speak French too. It’s a different kind of mantis.

CURIOSITIES!!!One of the curiosities of Maurice is the animal ceremony that they do every year. Pople get together with their pets and the Father of Maurice blesses all of them. I think it’s a very nice ceremony because pets play beetwen them, and have a good time.

Flora

Let’s talk about the flora in Maurice.

FRUIT TREESThis is a jackfruit tree. It’s a very popular tropical fruit in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, etc… Jackfruit trees are also found all across Africa. It’s fruit can even get to weight 35kg. It’s lenght is about 90cm, and it’s diameter is about 50cm.

This is a carambola, also known as star fruit. I think it’s a very strange fruit, because if you cut it, it actually looks like a star.

In Maurice there are other kinds of fruit you might know, for example:

Lichis.They are a very sweet. They are White in the inside, and reddish in the outside. They are tropical fruits, and you an find them in Maurice.

Papayas.This is a very sweet fruit, even more than lichis. People cook the flower of the papaya tree.

FLOWERSThis are sugar-cane flowers. Sugar-cane is edible.

There are also very beautiful flower like this epiphytic orchid. It’s scientific name is rhyncholaelia digbyana.

This is an hibiscus. There is a very large variety of them.

CURIOSITIES!!!

This is one of the rarest flowers worldwide. Its shape reminds us of a parrot, it's amazing!It even looks like a fake!
