Photography• Shutter speed is the length of time that a camera’s sensor is

exposed to light. The longer the sensor is exposed, the more light will be captured. A fast shutter speed (e.g. 1/120) allows you to capture a single moment, giving you a crisp action-shot. A slow shutter speed (e.g. 4/1) will allow more light in and therefore will give a more blurred image of movement.

• Aperture is the size of the hole which light is allowed through in photography. Low aperture means a larger hole and high aperture a smaller hole. This has a big effect on depth of field and a low aperture (e.g.F2.8) focuses only the centre of the photo with the background and foreground out of focus whereas, a high aperture (e.g. F32) makes everything be in focus.

Discarded Photographs

I have chosen to discard this photograph because it looks more alternative than pop because of the outfit the model is wearing. The mise-en-scene of this image is also quite unprofessional because you can see the bookshelf and vase around her. I also really want to use an image where my model is looking directly at the camera although I do like the candid style of this photo.

I like this image a lot however, for my front cover I would like to use a more engaging image where she is looking at the camera. I am also discarding it because I don’t like the way that she is cut off at every edge because it doesn’t leave me with much to play with in terms of Photoshop. I like this front on angle however, I find the book case in the background to be disrupting the mise-en-scene of the image.

My Chosen ImageI have chosen this photograph because it matches the vision I had for my pop magazine. The colours in the image give it the pop style and I really like the way that she is holding the guitar. I feel like the casual costuming works to portray her as down to earth while her makeup adds to the pop star effect. I also really like the medium shot that I used because it allows me to see her face ,upper body and guitar. The way that she is smiling slightly down the camera, using a chocolate box gaze is subtly inviting and friendly. This image also suggests her love of music making it clear that this is a music magazine. When editing my image, I will intensify the white of the background and may play with contrast as the light box was not as powerful as I was hoping and it’s angle created a strange shadow behind my model. I like that there is space for my masthead in the top left hand corner which I believe will work very well. Century ut
