1. Introduction
This is the final ENBE project of August intake 2014, titled “Better Town of The
Future”. In this project, we are given a task to create a better town because the people in “X”
town is no longer liveable.
By doing this project, we have to investigate and understand well the content
related to a town and the build environment, therefore, we can propose a better future town.
Others than that, we have to do a lot of research on the ancient, current and future towns to
help us to understand the components and element of a town.
After we done a plenty of research, we need to investigate and collect the data
from our research to plan the landscape, geometry, structure of our future town to ensure that
the future town is sustainable and liveable. Our environment is continuously polluted by
human activities, so we have to learn to design a building or town which can reduce the
pollution.

2.The Town
2.1 Definition of Town
A town is a human settlement larger than a village but smaller than a city. It contains many
houses, shops, places of work, places of entertainment, commercial area and many others
facilities.
2.2 Deffienrent between Town and City
When compare a town and a city, a city is a relatively permanent and highly organized center
of population, it also greater in size and more important than town and village. A city also
called as the highest forms of social organization because of the complexity of road systems,
transportation, building laws, markets, food distribution, educational systems, sanitation,
utilities and housing. City is important to a country because it is the most developed area and
usually is a command points which economic decisions are made.
2.3 Brief of History
A town is not just an overgrown village. It has its own economy. In Medieval towns tended to
grow around areas where people easy to meet each other such as crossroads or rivers.
Compare to a village, a town needed more water resources for daily use. Many towns had
large fences built around and the gates of these fences were locked at night for safety reason.
A town would not have enough wealth to build wall around them like a city. A town may
owned by a lord and it is he/she responsible to make sure the town was popular with
merchants as they paid tax. Other than that, a town also has its own law to solve legal
problem. Lastly, a town also does not have a complete sewage system.
2.4 What Makes A Town?
A town consist of manufacturing industry, commercial area, residential area, education area,
religion and culture and services area. A town also has their own economic and cultural
characteristics but lacking other characteristics of urban localities.

2.5 What Makes A Good Town?
A good town should include:
1. A good cleanliness around the town.
2. Abundant nature. ( Plant trees and flower around the town)
3. Good connection and accessibility. (Transportation)
4. Proper planning of infrastructure.
5. Good education system.
6. Have green area.
7. Advance technology of health and medical.
8. Stable economy.
9. Innovation and business vitality.
10. Have sufficient job opportunities for younger generations.
2.6 What Is The Future Towns?
Nowadays, there are many pollution occur around us such as air pollution, soil
pollution, water pollution and sound pollution. In Beijing, China, the government
even give advice to the citizens to ware mask rapidly when going out because the
condition of air there reached dangerous level. These pollution will cause several
effect to our environment such as the increase of water level and the increase of
temperature. Besides, people also suffer from the natural disaster. For example,
tsunami, volcano eruption and tornado. Therefore, in future, the design of the building
will be a disaster resistant building. Moreover, the future town will aim to reduce or
eliminate the use of fossil-fuel instead of hydrogen and electrical. The future town
also will have a lot of green space to create a more comfort and environmentally
living space to the citizens and will be more concern on the activities to reduce the
pollution and protect our environment.

Ancient Cities / Towns
Akrotiri, Santorini
3.1 History
In 1967, at the site called Akrotiri under the
late Professor Spyridon Marinatos have made
Thera the best-known Minoan site outside of
Crete. At that time, the southern tip of a large
town has been uncovered. The site was not
complex but it’s the masonry and fine wall-
paintings show that was certainly no
conglomeration of merchants’ warehousing
either. An outpost of Crete was settled by
Minoans as early as 3000 BC and reached its
peak after 2000 BC, this is the period of the
developed trade and agriculture and settled
the present town. The inhabitants cultivated
olive trees and grain and developed
sophisticated forms of art and architecture.

Santorini’s volcanic explosion in 1450 BC had destroyed the flourishing Minoan world on
Crete. At Akrotiri, pots and tools are still where their owners left them abandoning the town.
After the eruption in 1450 BC, Santorini was uninhabited for about two centuries. The ruins
of Akrotiri remained buried until 1860, when workers extracting volcanic ash for use in the
Suez Canal. Systematic excavations began from 1967 and continued until 2005.
3.2 What ancient town that I am concentrating on?
Akrotiri is also known as
the “Minoan Pompeii” and
it is also the most important
archaeological sites on the
Greek island of Santorini.
Until now, it still
undergoing major
excavations sheltered
beneath a large shed.
3.3 Significant and details of the town?
Akrotiri has impressive building which include three-story houses faced with masonry and
vivid frescoes which very well preserved in the ash. Its streets, squares and walls were also
preserved, the wall reached eight metres height and indicating the major town.
Besides, the significant of this ancient town is the water system. The town had a complete
drainage system and umpiring from the artwork. Pipes with running water and water closets
that found at Akrotiri are the oldest such utilities discovered. The drainage system in Akrotiri
was running in twin system, one pipe is for hot water and another pipe is for cold water. This
had proved that the Therans used both hot and cold supplies. The origin of the hot water
probably was geothermic because Akrotiri was located in the volcano area.

I was inspired by the design of the street and the building and put it into the layout of my
future town. It was designed and managed well so it was easy to access. I was also impressive
that the frescoes was preserved very well in the ash for so many year. The drainage system at
Akrotiri had shown that how they fully use the geometric of their site.
3.5 What information or element that I use to my new
future town?

4.3 Significant and details of the town?
Taipei is the most populous city in Taiwan. Taipei 101 is the
world’s tallest building from the year 2004-2010. Taipei 101 is the
largest engineering project ever in the Taiwan construction
industry, it is designed by the world-class architect C.Y Lee. The
design concept was came from the Chinese number 8 which
means lucky in Chinese culture. Eight-floor structural units are
linked one by one on top of each other to form the whole. This is a
new rhythmic aesthetic of skyscraper. Besides, the sectional of the
building used Mega Structure System for disaster and protection
from wind damage. The design of the foundation guarantees
pedestrian safety and comfort. The structure of the building will
increase in size as getting higher. The transparent and non-
reflecting curtain walls enable for people to watch a clear view
from the building because the curtain walls energy efficient and
heat reflective.
Taiwan has a good transportation system. There have several public transport portions in
Taiwan. Based on the research, Taipei residents having the highest utilization rate at 34.1%.
The Taipei Metro is the first Taiwan metro system, it known as MRT formally as the Taipei
Rapid Transit System. The system consists of 103 stations and 11 lines, operating 121.4
kilometres of revenue track. This system proved effective for urban renewal, it increases the

6.1 How did I came up with the solution to create this new
town?
Nowadays, the pollution of our environment was getting worse. The increase of temperature
had cause the water level getting higher. Therefore, in future, our land will become lesser. To
solve this problem, I recommend my residents to move to a new town called “ Pearl Town”
which is floating on the sea.
Important Consideration When Planning the Town
To create and plan a town is not an easy task. There are many of things that we have to be
aware of and consider a lot of aspect to create a well-planned town.
1. The accessibility and the connectivity of the town.
2. Environmental responsibility.
3. Efficient transport system.
4. Suitable population density.
5. Strong economy.

6.2 What is the important characteristic and
elements in the town ?
Good transportation system
A well-planned transportation system in a town is very important to achieve a successful
town. The underground train transportation system in my future town was planned to connect
the north, south, east and west point to the centre point of my town. It is also able to access to
the airport and port and shipping area so that it gave convenience to the citizens and for the
import and export industry.

The accessibility and the connectivity of the town
The walkability and circulation was considered in my town planning. I had design the
walkway, cycling path and driveway to ensure citizens in my town can access to anywhere
easily.
Sustainable/Green Approaches
Collect the waste to produce biomass energy.
Practice 3R and use the recycle product.
Use hydrogen car or compressed air car to reduce the emission of CO2.
Encourage citizens to use the main transport (MRT) which is planned well in
the town.
Green wall.
Green spaces around the town.

Uses of renewable energy
The main energy sources of my town are from Solar Power Filed and Wave Energy
Generator. Solar Panel will absorb the heat energy during the day time and convert the heat
energy to electrical energy. The converted electrical energy is then ready to supply to others
area of the town. The Wave Energy Generator is also using the same concept as the Solar
Panel, the different is Wave Energy Generator convert from the wave energy to electrical
energy.

6.5 Conclusion about the new town
Pearl Town is an environmental friendly design and well-planned to make sure the circulation
is smooth. The management and the development of the town is important to reduce the
pollution and design a comfort and safety town to the citizens.
The main transport in Pearl Town is the underground MRT. The yellow line show the route of
MTR and the red circles represent the MRT station. The red double circle at the centre of the town
is the main MRT station which can access to the east, south, north and west part of the town.
The blue colour line at the residential areas had provided a walkway and cycling path only for citizens. There
is no drive way because the residential areas are not suitable to drive so fast. In Future, vehicles will be
replaced by hydrogen car and compressed air car which can drive in a very high speed.

7.Conclusion
Through this ENBE final project, I had learned how to design and manage a
good town. By using the green technologies to the town, it helps a lot to reduce the pollution
to our environment and create an environmental friendly space to the citizens. For example, I
had design the green wall to the main building like the government building at my future
town.
This project is a good experience for me to try and design a town. Design a
town is tough because it include a lot of consideration and we need to be aware of what will
influence to the citizens, the town itself and the environment before we decide to put the
design inside. We should know what the positive and negative effect is after we constructed
the design, and then only make a final decision of the design. I’m glad that I know how to
design a better town.
