GENRE QUESTIONNAIRE

INTRODUCTION In order to conclude the genre that  our target audience liked the most, we had to find what different conventions are conically recognized for this genre. This is the questionnaire we offered to our target audience to conduct investigation for the creating of our music video:

What are your favourite genre?

-Pop –Rock –Indie –RnB -Other

WHAT COLOURS DO YOU ASSOCIATE WITH PUNK ROCK MUSIC VIDEOS?: We felt that this was one of the most important questions we could ask our target audience because colour is essential to help set the tone and mood of the music video. Therefore, this would give them a good idea of how the video would ‘feel’, and this can often determine whether or not the video is watched the whole way through. We asked the same amount of people as for the previous questionnaire we created, and the results are presented in a pie chart form below:Colours of Genre

RedBlackGreenBrown

As this shows, the majority of the 36 people asked felt that black should be the most prominent colour in punk rock music videos. This was followed by red, then green and then brown. As a result of the feedback, we will use the colour black most prominently within our video.

ARE THERE ANY COSTUMES THAT YOU ASSOCIATE WITH THIS GENRE? We then moved onto another vital aspect of any music video, which was the

costumes. Although they are not considered as important in punk rock videos, we felt that it was still a good idea to ask our target audience about their opinions. We gave them clear options, narrowed down to a few generic costumes as obtained from our prior research of this area of music videos within this genre.

Costumes

Once again, there was a clear favourite within the choices we gave our target audience, which was that our costume of choice should at least include a leather jacket. This was followed by denim jeans, plaid shirts, and other.

ARE THERE ANY LOCATIONS THAT YOU ASSOCIATE WITH THIS GENRE?: Most music videos have a few different key locations, which they switch between during the

course of the video, so we felt that this would also be of interest to our target audience. We then came up with a few locations that we had seen in other music videos of this genre, and what we felt would be most appropriate given the darker mood and tone we are potentially going for in our music video.

Locations

Woods Stage

Abandoned warehouse Other

The results from the pie chart show that the majority of the participants were leaning towards the most prominent location to be a stage setting. We felt that this would fit in with our previous research, as most of the videos we watched highlighted the performance over the narrative, and the best place they used to showcase this was on stage. This was followed by setting it in a woods, an abandoned warehouse or another location. Although we will probably use a stage as one of the main locations of our video, we may consider a few more to ensure variety from the choices found here.

IF THERE ARE ANY NARRATIVES IN THIS GENRE, WHAT ISSUES OR EVENTS DO THEY NORMALLY CONCERN?

Although through our research, we have discovered that narratives are not as important to punk rock music videos as the performance aspect, we still felt that they should be integral to our video. This is because it allows the visuals on screen to link up with the lyrics of the song, and this can often help the target audience understand what message they are trying to get across.

Narratives

Love Loss Rejection Other

As many punk rock themes deal with all of themes we have chosen as options, the target audience felt that they were all equally important. This may be the case because the songs from this genre can often include more than one theme, and the song we have chosen tends to deal with all of these themes to a certain extent. Although the target audience felt that all of these themes were important, we feel as if we will ultimately choose what theme feels the most appropriate in terms of the final idea we have, and whether or not it fits the lyrics of the song.

WE ARE PLANNING TO DO A MUSIC VIDEO FOR “HANDS AND FACES” BY THE USED, WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON THIS SONG?

After a long process of coming up with songs we all like and felt that fitted the genre and narrowing them down, we finally decided to use Hands and Faces by the Used. This was because we felt that we had come up with a substantial idea that would potentially work better than all of the other song choices we had initially, and also fitted in the best with our genre as it is an unusual song. We then put this song choice to our target audience in order to gather their opinions on them, as they are best placed to judge whether or not is appropriate for the genre we are representing. Opinions of Hands and Faces

Execllent Good Okay Bad

When the 36 people were asked their opinion on Hands and Faces, the majority felt that it was an excellent song choice, and only a few were not that keen on the choice. This positive response to our song choice is very good for us as it means we fulfilling one of the most important factors of the music video, as the whole video wouldn’t feel right if the song choice wasn’t appropriate for the genre we are representing.

WE HAVE CHOSEN SOME MUSIC VIDEOS FROM THIS GENRE, DO YOU HAVE ANY OPINIONS ON THEM?

In order to confirm that we have chosen a genre-appropriate song, we decided to choose a few other songs from the punk rock genre, in order to see if they liked these choices also. Some choices come from similar bands to the Used, and this would enable us to have a firm idea of exactly what our target audience wants, so that we could bear this in mind in the later planning stages of our music video. The choices are as follows, along with a description of whether the music video for each song contains either a narrative or a performance, or in some cases both:

-My Chemical Romance: Famous Last Words (Performance)-Fall Out Boy: A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More “Touch Me” (Narrative)-Panic! At The Disco: Ready To Go (Performance + Narrative)Other songs

Famous last words A little less 16 candles Ready to go

The results of this were that the majority of the 36 we asked preferred Ready to Go by Panic! At the Disco, which was a combination of performance and narrative. This is good as it confirms our previous research that the best music video for the punk rock genre should contain both of these elements. We will decide later on, when we finalise our ideas, whether or not there will be more of one or the other, or if the performance and narrative elements will be equal.
