Aggregate - Porous

N/W corner of Montauk Hwy and Bonny Dr.Mastic, N.Y

This aggregate is designed to be used as a base material for future roadway repairs. Also, the aggregate can serve as reinforcement to add strength to the overall composite material.

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Berm

S/E bound side of Veterans Hwy. and East of Macarthur AirportHolbrook, NY

This is a raised land area that is separating two areas. The berm either reduces the velocity of the water, or directs water to areas that are not susceptible to erosion, thereby reducing the adverse effects of running water on exposed topsoil

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Bulb-out

N/W corner of the West side entrance to Islip Middle School from 27AIslip, NY

Designed to slow down traffic as per leaving or entering into a public area. Also, this prevents quick or sudden turns. Motorists may travel more slowly at intersections or midblock locations with bulb outs depending upon how narrow the roadway becomes.

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Caliper (of tree)

In the back yard that is located at 41 linden Lane Shirley, NY

This is generally located one foot up from the base of a tree. Caliper means the diameter of the trunk. It is a stronger indication of age than height of a tree.

Page 9: GERALD TRUMPF - PROJECT #1

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Catch Basin

At the N/W corner of Grand Ave. and St. James StreetHolbrook, NY

A drainage devise built on roadways and designed to catch the storm water flow. Most catch basins use an outlet pipe to disperse the water to a natural source of outlet and some are designed with leaching chambers or pits to percolate into the soil.

Curb Cut

S/E side of the entrance From McGraw St. to the Floyd Harbor retail centerShirley, NY

Curb cuts placed at street intersections allow someone in a wheelchair, or bicycle to move onto or off a sidewalk without difficulty. Also, curb cuts are section of curb that naturally drops down to a lower elevation. Both ends of the curb are cut down to a lower level in this picture.

Curb Cut Ramp

S/E corner of the side entrance to Islip Middle School From 27AIslip, NY

Curb cut ramps blend smoothly down from a sidewalk to a street, rather than abruptly ending with a curb and dropping roughly 4–6 inches. A curb cut ramp in a sidewalk is similar to an ADA ramp because it is used to promote accessibility. Many times these ramps will have the detectable warning bumps on them, which is a warning device for people with disabilities.

Drip Line of Tree

Distance between the Drip line of a Tree

S/E bound on Veterans Hwy. and East of Macarthur AirportHolbrook, NY

This the distance between a trees outer most leaves. The trip line is the area directly located under the circumference of the tree branches.

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Driveway Apron

South side of 27A and roughly15 meters East of MM 0705West Islip., NY

This section of concrete is acting like a skirt to the driveway itself. A concrete apron is the part of a driveway that makes the transition to the roadway smoother.

Drop Curb

South side of South Country Rd.Bayport, NY

A curb built at a higher elevation that smoothly drops down to a lower elevation. Also, the two ends of a driveway apron that smoothly transition from its high elevation to that elevation equal to the road are considered drop curbs.

Dry Well/ Leaching Pool – Precast Concrete

Near to both Coastal and USA gas stationsS/E of Waverly Ave. and just south of Montauk Hwy. Patchogue, NY

Designed to be installed under ground. Properly designed, maintained and operated sewage disposal systems minimize thepossibility of disease transmission and the potential for contamination of ground and surfacewaters

Located in the yard of a D.O.T field office. N/W side of Route 112 about 1000 feet S/E of Bicycle PathBetween Port Jefferson Station and Coram , NY

This is a settlement control device. It is usually installed above the sub base to help prevent slow down flooding. Also, geo-textile fabrics are used in association with soil because of their ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain.

Invert (of Pipe)

Near the N/W corner of Montauk Hwy. and Bonny Dr.Mastic, NY

This the inside bottom of a pipe. It’s is the place that is used to denote a drainage pipes elevation under ground. Also, this is the portion of the interior of a drain or sewer pipe where the liquid is deepest .

Page 20: GERALD TRUMPF - PROJECT #1

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Retaining Wall

N/E side of Pipe Stave Hollow Rd.Rocky point, NY

A retaining wall is a structure that holds back soil or rock from a building or structure. Retaining walls prevent down slope movement or erosion and provide support for vertical or near-vertical grade changes. This is used to holding back the force of the soil on this property.

Right-of-Way

On route 25A and just east of the S/E corner of Shore Rd. Setauket, NY

Silt Fence

Near to both Coastal and USA gas stations. The job site is located North of Montauk Hwy. and just East of Waverly Ave.Patchogue, NY

S/W side of Route 112Port Jefferson Station, NY

A silt-fence is designed to protect areas adjacent to work zones from the dust buildup and debris. Also, they are perimeter controls and typically used in combination with sediment basins , which are designed to retain sediment in place where soil is being disturbed by construction processes.

Riprap

Cedar BeachRocky Point

Riprap is used to protect coastlines and structures from erosion by the sea, rivers, or streams. Also, it is used on any waterways or water containment where there is potential for water erosion

Gerald TrumpfSite Planning and Design (ARC 363)Prof: LoPiccoloProject #1 Swale (Vegetated)

In the median of Nichols Rd. about 100 feet North of Montauk Hwy.Blue Point, NY

An area of land that slopes equally from both sides. This is designed as a drainage system because it controls the flow of rain water. Swales can be natural or manmade, and are designed to trap particulate pollutants(suspended solids and trace metals), promoteinfiltration, and reduce the flow velocity of storm water runoff.

Zero Lot Line

N/E of the corner of E. Broadway and E. Main St.Port Jefferson, NY

A home that is built almost entirely up to the edges of its property. Most zero-lot line homes are built on or toward the edge of a lot's outer boundary (hence the "zero-lot" moniker), have either small front yards or small back yards (big enough for gardening), and just a thin strip of turf for side yards, thus minimizing maintenance.
