a license that facilitates reuse, and potentially adaptation,
without first requesting permission from the copyright holder."

What are Open Educational Resources
(OER)?
What are some types of OER? Stand-alone T&L objects,
including but not limited to: Lecture handouts Class Notes Revision/ Exam Prep Facilitation
Materials Test Scopes Tutorial Guides – full term/semester, or
simply per class/ session
Your own support materials for expanding insight and engagement in your edu-domain and related environments - Pictures of your white-board? Do you just write and erase?
Recordings (audio and/or visual – consider available TECH) of your lectures or other teaching engagements, those important features requiring further exploration and thought?
Test or exam rubrics?
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU IMAGINE AS POTENTIAL OER THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY, OR MAY ALREADY
HAVE, MADE?

Busting some common OER myths often encountered: http://mythbusting.oerpolicy.eu/
Teachers need more time and work to adapt OER
Discussing teachers’ work on preparation and adoption of learning materials is a much more complex issue and depends on many factors. Changes to resource-based learning which are happening recently are a part of increased work time needed for teachers to create and adapt learning materials to more individualized and active use. Growing access to different resources on the internet, combined with the ongoing rollout of ICT infrastructure into educational institutions brings a lot of new challenges for
teachers. OERs are rather a solution then a cause of the problems. Though, as any new solution or device, they need some time to become easy and intuitive for people who want to work with them.
OER movement is developing very fast on new tools, database and learning opportunities for teachers and educator to implement them in their work. As the number of open resources and tools will grow, it will be easier for teachers to work with them. Also, if we want to work with complete sets of resources like e-textbook (and a lot of those are already available for many subjects in many countries) there can be no additional work.

How to adapt/localize training material Open Training Platform
“...When it comes to open sharing, authors start being afraid of
losing the control over their work...”
“they also consider open publication as giving the work for free and receiving nothing
in return. These concerns, while understandable, rarely turn out to be justified. There is always a risk even if the work is copyrighted, that it may be used, without asking for permission, by someone acting illegally.
Such situation may happen regardless the type of legal protection of authors’ intellectual rights.”
“On the other hand, publishing under open conditions increases the visibility and the
availability of their work.”
http://mythbusting.oerpolicy.eu/authors-will-not-agree-to-such-terms-of-open-publication/
Yes!!!There are many more concerns.
What are yours?
Please take the time to share your own questions, critiques and
suggestions in the evaluation form available for you to complete at the
end of this awareness-raising session
Little to no awareness was evident after delivering the info-sharing introduction session about OER to lecturing staff in the 2 faculties at NMMU, on 2 separate campuses and occasions
Staff in several sessions, as well as in 2 x T&L Committee meeting presentations; with institutional Research Committee meetings: participants were highly motivated to understand more about OER, and expressed interest to explore the implications and processes of being more Open
Anecdotal experiences at NMMU: staff information-sharing workshops 2014/2015 –
The chief concern voiced (and repeatedly written in individual
session evaluations)
The change in practice and
effort required to adapt course material is often considered prohibitive
“Must I?” NMMU seems to present comparable responses experienced after several OER-related staff development and information sharing sessions at Unisa (2009 – 2014) as similarly conducted.
Recent* research from the USA says OER awareness is (still) low amongst educators in HE (W&F Hewlitt Foundation and Pearson)
between one third and three quarters of those surveyed (2014) classify themselves as “unaware” of OER
Raises a question: Do respondents even know what OERs are?

Awareness of OER
Interesting findings stem from this study:
faculty appreciate the concept of OERsfaculty are largely willing to try OERsfaculty consider OERs as high quality, effective resources
Most significant barrier to adoption of OERs, as was found:the time and effort required to find and evaluate an OER
Using an OER for Writing and Assessment
Advocating for Open at NMMU Selected a Primary tool to approach writing challenges and explore OER potential at NMMU A writing OER: an open tool via OERcommons/ LoC
no devices copies of excerpt/ text to engage
with in hardcopy hand written, supported writing artefacts for immediate review, for groupwork,
for developing in association with academic support units
…the steps are essential and handy in writing a good piece…
…when answering the questions, I realised that I was not specific, my statements were vague…
…It got me to reflect on a question and critically think about what I am writing…
student reflections…using the OER
…learnt not to be so ignorant of the things happening around me…
…very insightful, I’d like to see more…
…I’m going to share what I learnt here today, it might help quite a few people that I know…
student reflections:engaging social issues via OER #RhodesMustFall#RhodesSoWhite
About yesterday’s presentation, a welcome eye-opener to all of us; it also puts the Writing Centre in a more “modern” light. OER: thumbs up!*
Motivational, interesting, you caught and kept our attention, eye-opener and a nice exercise in class; the Rhodes topic interesting and stimulating
I definitely see potential for using the OER Writing Tool in my T&L. To make it more meaningful and practical, I would like us to spend more time on the actual OER searching part in class, this could then be enforced and followed up by means of an assignment*
Lecturer reflections
*Response after Intro to Open & OER, instigating further interactions, several emails, and ongoing and future engagements
1. What is your impression about OER?
2. Would you try OER?Consider why/ why not: to what aim? What would you expect using it?
3. What do you think the gap between your knowing about OER and actually using, or trying, an OER is, if any?
