Design (Rochford – p.35) The process in which we think out to a problem Finding answers to practical problems Identifying a problem and realising the solution Finding the best solution to a problem within a particular

set of circumstances. Aesthetics (Rochford – p.49)

Refers to the appearance of the completed design project.

Ergonomics (Rochford – p.50) those factors or qualities in the design of something,

especially a workplace or equipment used by people, that contribute to comfort, efficiency, safety, and ease of use.

Function (Rochford – p.49) Refers to how well the project works in relation

to the identified needs. Health & Safety (Rochford – p.54)

The safe use of, tools, materials, techniques and the use for a design, producer, user and disposer throughout the life cycle of a design project.

Need (Rochford – p.49) Things that people must have to survive and

grow.

Durability (Rochford – p.55) Refers to whether the design will last for its

designed life in the situation or environment for which it has been designed.

Obsolescence (Rochford – p.55) Refers to when a design project is no longer

usable and must be either discarded, reused or recycled.

Glossary 4 Sustainability (Rochford – p.51)

Refers to the use of renewable resources so that reserves are not depleted too quickly.

Innovation (Rochford – p.99) The act or process of inventing or

introducing something new. Life Cycle (Rochford – p.50)

Refers to the analysis of a design at all stages, from conception to disposal.

Each society will be affected differently by innovation and technology and to a certain extent is influenced by economic and political issues, culture and history.

Environmental Issues with Design (Rochford:p.116)

With increasing environmental awareness, emerging technologies must not have a serious deleterious effect on the environment.
