Labor Relations ImproveNational Labor Relations Act known as the
Wagner Acct—people have the right to unionize and anti-union practices were banned. The government has the right to be an mediator.
Fair Labor Standards Act—Set up minimum wage and a 40 hour work week. First minimum wage was 25 cents per hour.
These acts led to the growth of the American Federation of Labor and the Committee on Industrial Organization.
(Skilled and Unskilled workers)
Memorial Day Massacre—10 killed and 84 wounded when a company ordered to negotiate with works.
NLRB v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp.—Company was found guilty of unfair labor practices and order to pay and rehire workers with back pay.
Court Packing
Several New Deal Programs were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
1. Agricultural Adjustment Act.
2. National Relations Act.
Roosevelt proposed adding new justices to the Supreme Court. It was called Court Packing.
Court Packing means appointing judges who would benefit Roosevelt’s causes.
Court Packing was seen as a threat to checks and balances.

Women in the Depression
Eleanor Roosevelt helped women and minorities.
Several women were appointed to high government positions.
Francis Perkins became Secretary of Labor.
Working women faced resentment.
Women’s wages still were lower than men.

African Americans
Mary McLeod Bethune was a Friend of Eleanor Roosevelt.
1. She was appointed head of the “Black Cabinet” to inform the president on minority affairs.
Marion Anderson’s Concert
1. It was held at the Lincoln Memorial.
2. She was denied the right to sing at Constitutional Union Hall because of her color.
Franklin D. Roosevelt never fully committed to civil rights.
African Americans came to support the Democratic Party because of his relief programs. They became basically Democrats starting in 1946.

Many artists displayed the reality of the depression.

Grant Wood was a painter of American Gothic.
Richard Wright was a Black Writer who wrote “Native Son” a young man trying to survive in a racist world.
John Steinbeck wrote “The Grapes of Wrath” about the dust bowl.
Zora Neal Hurston was a Black Writer who wrote during this time “Their Eyes Are Watching God” about a young women growing up in Florida.

“Gone With The Wind” was a motion picture on the Civil War that came out in 1939.
“Wizard of Oz” was starring Judy Garland came out in 1939.
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was an animation by Walt Disney that came out in 1937.
