What we know from research:

• Kids have to be reading before grade 3.

• They need the best teaching of the reading and writing processes in these early years.

• Some skills in learning to read and write are developmental.

• The earlier we know a child is not going to be a successful reader, the better.

From experience:

• Targeting kids young prevents behaviour issues

• Children are more successful if they have had RICH pre- school experiences – we’re finding some ‘holes’ here now that we know what to look for.

• We are finding kids with cognitive issues sooner and putting plans into action sooner.

• We are also finding ‘holes’ where children didn’t get RR, grade two students who are low…….

Next steps??

• Building capacity in our Grade One teachers

Intensive Literacy for our grade two students and those who did not get Reading Recovery and are just on the cusp………

Coaching……Building capacity of all of our teachers so they become more adept in knowing and using effective literacy strategies…..

Focusing on high needs kids – getting them up to par……

Three new priorities:

Research Capacity

Collaborative Cross School Authority AISI Projects and Networks

Community Engagement

AISI• Student engagement

• We must involve research, be innovative and ref lect change processes

• New requirements involve the focus on research and improvement. – we must conduct research to address specific questions and report findings.

• Must demonstrate active and meaningful engagement with key stakeholders
