Life In The Plants

Class-VI

Previous Knowledge:-

(1) Students have studied science up to class V.

(2) They have studied about living things.

Objectives:-

(1) Children will study about the growth in plants.

(2) Students will study about the regeneration in the plants.

(3) They will know about stimulation and response in the plants.

(4) Students will study about the respiration in the plants.

Material Required:-

(1) One diagram in which different kinds of plants and animals are

drawn.

(2) Few plants of special types planted in pots.

(3) Beaker, test tube, limewater etc.

Expected answer from the students.

Activity by the teacher.

Activity done by the students.

Achieved objective: children can recognize plants, trees and animals. You told: Trees, plants, elephant, dear, fish, tortoise, and frog etc.

(1) What do see in the picture given in front of you?You are able to see living trees and small plants. You can see - living animals like elephant, dear, fish, duck, tortoise and frog etc.

You told: They are living things.

Their shape changes.

Their size increases.

(2) What similarity do you see among the plants and the animals given in the picture?1. You notice that plants and trees remain fix at one place but their size increases/is not it? 2. You see that the elephant, fish etc move from one place to another and their size increases/is not it?

iii

Page 4: Graphic module of science class vi for Teachers

Students plant the tree in a pot and they nourish it with water and fertilizers.

(3) You plant a tree and nourish it with water and fertilizers and observe it for a week and fill the table given every day.

Achieved objective:They know growth.You told:

1.Increases

ii. Multiply

iii. Multiply

iv. Yes there is a bud.

v. Yes

vi. Yes there is a growth.

(4) See the picture and tell:-i. Does the plant increase in length or not? ii. Do the number of branches multiply or not? iii. Do the number of leaves multiply or not? iv. Is there any bud on the plant or not? v. Can you see any flower blooming on it or not? vi. Is there any growth in the plant or not?

iv

Page 5: Graphic module of science class vi for Teachers

You say: Plant grows.

(5) Similarly you observe the plants in your kitchen garden for 15 days and tell that whether there is any growth in the plants or not?

You say:

i. multiply.

ii. They shed.

iii. Yes blossom.

iv. Yes become.

v. Ripen.

Yes there is growth.

(6) Think carefully that you see some trees and plants continuously for 2 years what you observei. Do the number of leaves in the plants multiply/do not multiply?ii. Do they shed leaves/not shed?iii. Do the flowers blossom on them. /do not blossom?iv. Do flowers become fruits or do not become?v. Do the fruits ripen or do not ripen? On the whole there is growth in the plants or not.

objective:Students know about the regeneration in the plants They understand the regeneration in the plants very well

the picture, in one of the pots one branch of the plant is broken. If you give water and fertilizers for about one week you see that its broken branch regenerates again. So growing of the branches again in the plant is called regeneration. Do you understand regeneration in the plants/do not you?

It is called regeneration. Very well.

(8) In the picture you see a pot and broken plant. You nourish it for about one week you see that its branch regenerates. So growing of branches again is called regeneration in the plant/is not it?

vi

Achieved objective : They know reaction to the stimuli. They understand response to the stimuli.Very good.

(9) Student! You see the plant in the pot, in the picture. Cover it with a card board box with hole. So that from the hole plant gets light. Now after one week the situation of the plant will be like the picture. You find that the plant is bent towards the light. This is called the response and this process is response to the stimuli/do you understand stimuli and response /do not you?

Response to the stimuli.

Very well.

(10) Students! You have seen ‘touch me not’ plant. When you touch it, its leaves shrink. This is called response to the stimuli/is not it. The leaves of this plant are sensitive so it is called touch me not.

vii

Page 8: Graphic module of science class vi for Teachers

11. Response to the stimuli.

Very well.

(11) You have seen ‘ Portulaca’ plant (Rat Ki Rani) its flowers blossom at night tell me it is response to the stimuli or not?

Response to the stimuli.

Very good.

(12) You observe ‘Sunflower’ plant during the day. You see its flower and leaves keep bending towards the sun. This is also called response to stimuli.

viii

Page 9: Graphic module of science class vi for Teachers

They are able to understand growth, regeneration and response to the stimuli.

Very well.

(13) You observe a plant for about one week you see that its broken branch regenerates and its bud becomes flower. In this plant growth and regeneration occurred together. Now cover the plant under the card board with hole. After few days due to stimuli plant bends towards the light. Here you see in the same plant with the growth and regeneration there is response to stimuli also. So now you are able to understand growth, regeneration and response to stimuli/ don’t you understand?

You have matched them correctly.

(14) See the pictures and match the pictures with growth, regeneration and response to stimuli.

1. Response to stimuli.

2. Growth.3. Regeneration.

ix

Achieved objectives:They know respiration.

You told1. It is green.2. It is not green.

3. It has become green. Very well.

(15) Now take two small plants in pot A and pot B.1. Keep the pot A in open. 2. Keep the pot B covered with gas jar and make it vacuumed and close the jar. Observe both the plants for one week and see.1. The plant in pot A is green/ or not green.2. The plant in pot B is green/ or not green.3. Now remove the gas jar from the pot B and observe the plant for two or three days the plant becomes green again/or not.

x

You told: It is called respiration.

(16) Take a pot with plant see its leaves from both sides. You can see small holes in it. Through these holes plants take oxygen. There is an exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen here. It is a complex process. And it is called respiration/does not it?

It turns milky.Very good.

(17) In a test tube take limewater and blow it with straw you see that lime water turns milky/is not it?Its means that there is carbon dioxide in the air which comes out while breathing, Now take two beakers. In beaker A put some soaked gram seeds. In beaker B put boiled gram seeds and cover both the beakers with gas jars. Keep them for four and five days. Now put the lime water in both the jars and observe.1. In beaker A limewater turns milky.2. In beaker B limewater does not turn milky. In beaker A limewater turned milky because in germinated plant there was respiration process. Germinated plants take oxygen and leave carbon dioxide.

It is called respiration.

(18)Living plants absorb oxygen

xi

Very well.

and release carbon dioxide this process is called respiration/is not it?

Process. (19)Respiration is a ------ in which plants take oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

(20- a) Till now you have seen in the plants.1. There is growth/is not it?2. There is regeneration/ is not it?3. There is response to the

stimuli./or not?4. There is respiration/is not it?

You told these are common features of plants.Very good.

(20-b) So now tell growth, regeneration, response to stimuli and respiration is common features of plants/is not?
