HALLOWEEN
Date: 31st October
Contents: Present Simple, colours, Halloween vocabulary (pumpkin, Jack O’Lantern,
spiders, ghosts, vampires, witches, fairies, jokes, scary, frightening, etc.)
Level: 1st and 2nd year of Basic Level.
Time: One hour and a half session.
Skills: Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction.
Procedure:
1) The students will read the different texts at home and will check the meanings of
new vocabulary in a bilingual dictionary.
2) In class, some students will read different paragraphs aloud. Their pronunciation
and intonation will be guided by their teacher and by their classmates who are
false beginners.
3) The students, guided by their teacher, will revise the meaning of the different
expressions which are new or which are difficult to understand. All the
comments will be made aloud in class, so that all the students can learn from
them.
4) The teacher and the students will be encouraged to make comparisons between
what Anglo-Saxon people do on Halloween and what people do in Spain and in
other countries to remember the dead (e.g. the celebration of All Saints’ Day, la
Santa Compaña in Galicia, los candilitos in some villages in the south of
Extremadura, cleaning the gravestones and visiting cemeteries, etc.)
