aggregated opinion of one self at any time, on a scale of negative and positive" (Harter, 1993, Pg.88 as cited in Kling et al 1999) • According to Harter, self esteem can be observed

as a degree of self success in academic, social and physical areas. • Self worthy Theory- Harter's theory was based on

social and emotional development

• It is mentioned that children are developing their self image as they grow older. A strong self image is important. • Why do you think that having a strong self

image is important?

• His theory influenced practice as it helps provide a strong and nurturing relationships with individual children. Also, for ensuring that settings provide a positive environment for children to learn. It also needs to satisfy adults- whether they feel comfortable leaving their children in that setting.

How to apply Harter's theory to practice.

• Demonstrating positive body language for example direct eye contact whilst communicating with the children. Always smiling so the children feel comfortable around you. Also it makes the children feel as if you come across in a positive manner. • Giving children unconditional praise and

acknowledgement for their every attempt and efforts. Why do you think that practitioners should do this? • Also, showing interest in what the child is doing.

For instance asking what they are playing.
