Who are we?We are a police department consisting of sworn officers,

civilian staff and student employees here to “maintain and promote human safety and the security of property” on and

around the campus.

We are also responsibly for property owned by the University in the cities of Oakland, Richmond, and Albany.

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

We are located in the basement of Sproul Hall on the main UC Berkeley campus

General Safety Tips Keep your personal property with you. Don’t leave your

wallet, laptop, backpacks and other important items unattended.

If you have a vehicle, do not leave valuables inside.

Be aware of your surroundings

Walk with others or use the Bear Walk Program at night

Walk in well lit areas at night

Do not prop doors or leave doors/windows unlocked if you are not there (residence, office, etc.)

Do not be afraid to report suspicious people or activity to us

Bicycle Safety Must obey traffic laws

Lots of bike theft in Berkeley

License your bicycle

Use a high quality “U-lock”

Lock both tires & frame to a fixed rack

Secure the seat

Do not leave bicycles out overnight

Lock bike in a well lit, well traveled area

It is recommended to wear a helmet

Don’t forget about the WALK ZONE

ATM Safety Use the ATM during daylight or get “cash back” at the

supermarket

Look for suspicious people or activity

Shield the keypad with your body when entering your PIN

Take your transaction receipts

Do not count or display money at an ATM

Do not give your PIN to anyone, including anyone posing as a police investigator or bank official

Smoking Law In California it is illegal to smoke in most public

buildings. The law specifies that anyone who smokes outside of the building must stay at least 25 feet away from the entrance.

In 2014, the UC Berkeley campus is becoming a Tobacco Free Zone

Driving in the U.S. Automobile insurance is mandatory if you own a car.

Become familiar with traffic laws.

Check dmv.ca.gov for specific info. on driving laws and licenses.

The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

ALCOHOL The legal drinking age in California is 21 years old

Underage drinking does have its consequences

Drink responsibly

Know your limit and pace your drinking

Designate a nondrinker in your group

Don’t leave your group and leave with a new acquaintance

Monitor your drinks, do not drink something not made in front of you or has been out of your sight
