NATURAL TREATMENT FOR AIDS Presented by Vedasree Reddy.Police 10T21SO112 Under the Guidance of Mrs.SharadhaSrikanth M.Pharm
CONTENTS: Types What does AIDS means Definition of Immunodeficiency
Disorders Etiological Agent Structure of HIV Steps of progression Diagnosis List of Natural Drugs Immune Boosters New Discoveries and updates
IMMUNODEFICIENCYDISORDER:
Failure or deficiency of immune system which manifests by occurrence of repeated infections in individuals with immune deficiency diseases.
TYPES:
Primary _ Genetic or Developmental abnormalities of immune system
Ex:Reticular dysgenesis
Secondary – Acquired Supression of Immunesystem.
Ex:AIDS,Infections.
AIDS MEANS:
Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome
An epidemic, transmissible retroviral disease caused by infection with HIV which leads to profound depression of cell mediated immunity.
ETIOLOGICAL AGENT:
HIV- Human Immuno Deficiency Virus.
2 forms:HIV-1HIV-2
A RNA retrovirus.
STRUCTURE OF HIV
STEPS OF PROGRESSION:
DIAGNOSIS:
1.For establising HIV infection:a.Antibody Test – ELISA Western blot
b.Direct Detection of HIV 2.Tests for Defects in Immunity 3.Tests for Detection of opportunistic
infections
NATURAL DRUGS
BITTERMELON LICORICE ECHINACEA CAT’S CLAW
BITTERMELON: FRIUTSOF MOMORDICACHARANTIA.FAMILY: CUCURBITACEAE.
MECHANISM:
Proteins-
MRK29, may inhibit the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, an enzyme involved in the replication of the HIV virus.
MAP30, which may have anti-HIV effects
and that may also improve the efficacy of other anti-viral drugs.
CONSIDERATIONS:
Short-term use of bitter melon is likely safe, but using it for more than three months may be unsafe.
Avoid in bleeding disorder
Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency people.
LICORICE: LICORICE ROOT IS THE ROOT OF PLANT GLYCYRRHIZAGLABRA OF FAMILY LEGUMINOSAE.
MECHANISM :
Glycyrrhizin inhibits HIV replication by 1.Inhibiting a cellular
enzyme(Casein Kinase )
2.Inhibiting viral adsorption, i.e,binding to
the host cell to be infected .
CONSIDERATIONS:
Pseudoaldosteronism.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take licorice.
Use of any licorice product is not recommended for longer than 4 - 6 weeks.
ECHINACEA: FLOWERING PLANT OF GENUS PURPUREA OF FAMILY ASTRACEAE.
MECHANISM:
Fat soluble Alkylamides of the flower provide Immunomodulatory effects which act by binding to cannabinoid receptors and thus inhibits tumour necrosis factor-α
CONSIDERATIONS:
One dose treatment is not effective.
Allergic reactions like asthma attack and leucopenia are seen.
Use along with hepatotoxic drugs is avoided.
Avoided in patients with autoimmune disorders
CAT’S CLAW: Climbing stems of Uncaria tomentosa of family Rubiaceae.
MECHANISM :
Quinovic acid has a property of
Pronounced enhancement effect on PHAGOCYTOSIS.
Increased production of T-lymphocytes.
CONSIDERATION:
Because of abortive effects, it is avoided in pregnant women.
Dizziness and Vomiting are seen.
IMMUNE BOOSTERS:
Aloe Vera Astragalus Ginkgo Ginger Garlic Olive leaf extract Calendula Green tea
NEW DISCOVERIES AND UPDATES
NATURE EXAMPLES
ALKALOIDS PAPAVERINE, NITIDINE
GLYCOSIDES ROSAMULTIN, ANDROGRAPHOLIDES
FLAVANOIDS MANGOSTIN, OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
COUMARINS CALANOLIDE, SUKSDORFIN
POLYSACCHARIDES CARRAGEENAN, HEPARIN

TANNINS OENOTHEIN, GALLIC ACID
LIGNANS ARCTIGENIN
CONCLUSION:
The remedy for all is –
“PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”
This holds good particularly in case of AIDS as it is a
preventable disease.
Leading a healthy and educative lifestyle can do
better with respective AIDS.
Natural remedy need not be necessarily be a cure
but can be an alternative or more preferably a
preventive in the case of AIDS.
