HOW TO CLASSIFY ROCKSBy Collette Phillips
WELCOME TO HOW TO CLASSIFY ROCKS ! AT THE END OF THE LESSON. THERE WILL BE A SHORT QUIZ AND VIDEO. SO PAY ATTENTION! LET’S START!
Sedimentary rocks
Which one is a sedimentary rock? Look for rounded grains and how the rock layers are aligned.
Which one is clastic? Which one is non-clastic?
\.
Hint: Clastic rocks are formed more by abrasion. Non-clastic rocks are made from chemicals
Metamorphic rocks
Which one is a metamorphic rock? Look for strong banding & orientation.
Which one is foliated? Which one is non-foliated?
Hint: Foliated metamorphic rocks are banded together more. They get this way by different amounts of heat and pressure.
Igneous rocks
Which one is an igneous rock? Look for texture and small crystals.
Which one is intrusive? Which one is extrusive?
Hint: Intrusive igneous rocks have larger minerals or crystals than extrusive igneous rocks
VERY GOOD!! YOU LEARN FAST!!
Now the QuizQ: What makes a sedimentary rock clastic? What makes it non clastic?
A: Clastic rocks are shaped by abrasion. Non-clastic rocks are made with chemicals.Q: What how can you tell the difference from a foliated metamorphic rock and a non-foliated rock? A: A foliated rock is banded together, while a non-foliated rock’s minerals it more spread out.Q: How can you tell a intrusive rock from an extrusive rock?
A: Intrusive igneous rocks have bigger minerals, because they were made inside the Earth. Extrusive rocks are have smaller minerals because they cooled fast outside the Earth’s crust.
