GROUP STUDYING

How To Graduate with...

GS

Hi, I’m Chevonnese,

I was first introduced to Group Studying when I was pursuing my Undergraduate Degree. It helped at that time and helped when I pursued my Master’s Degree. It is a useful tool in your arsenal when studying.

I hope these tips help.

GS

The TeamChoose wisely & try to keep the same team for years. Select persons from different backgrounds, disciplines, and outlook on life (if possible). They might be able to give you a different perspective on a topic.

GS

4 or 5Keep your team small. It gets very confusing when the team is larger than five persons. Conversations tend to last longer and the team can lose focus.

GS

Larger Than 5Study groups larger than 5 persons are best when studying with your class or cohort. These entities may have totally missed a topic that the teacher covered. Set tutorial sessions, so that your entire group can follow.

GS

Tricky StuffLarge study groups can be tricky. Don’t do them often, and you must have strict guidelines and timelines. It can easily get out of control with large study groups.

GS

GS & GPWhere possible, try to have the same team for Group Projects and Group Studying. This saves on time during the Storming Stage, because your team would have gone through it already.

GS

The EssenceTeach each other topics for the various courses. Those who understand a topic, teach those who don’t. It’s a different perspective for those who don’t understand & will reinforce the information for those who do.

GS

Study TimetableAt the beginning of the semester, the team will need to decide on when to meet, how you’ll meet and the topics to be covered. Discuss the topic and then answer as many questions on the topic together.

GS

AgendaHave an agenda for each gathering. Each member will have to let the others know what they understand from what they don’t understand. Set a time limit for each gathering and stick to it.

GS

Meet OnlineAll your teammates might not be able to meet face-to-face. Consider using Skype, ooVoo, Google Hangouts, or TeamViewer as the medium to meet.

GS

Other StudyingOther than reading your textbooks and answering questions from the teacher, textbook, and past papers, consider:● Movie Night● Jam Sessions & Quiz● Recordings

GS

Movie NightFind documentaries that explain a topic and make a movie night out of it. Write your questions, what you understand, and what you don’t understand. Discuss the documentary afterwards.

GS

Jam SessionsSplit the team in two. Each half prepares difficult questions for the other half. See which half will win. Discuss any question that was answered incorrectly.

GS

RecordingsDo a video, audio, or screen recording of you solving a problem, explaining your understanding of the topic, using equipment, etc. so that your team can use it to understand what must be done.

GS

SelflessnessDon’t be selfish with what you know. You might be strong in one course but weak in another. Assist others for courses you are strong in, so that you can get assistance for your weaker courses.

GS

Individual TimeAfter taking part in a group studying session, you MUST schedule time for you to go over what was done by yourself. There must be a balance between group and individual studying for your overall development.

GS

FriendshipStudy groups can build lifelong friends and potential professional team members. Who will you rather work with, someone you know, or someone you don’t?

GS

ProfessionalsForm good bonds with your cohort and course members. You may need to call upon them for assistance after you have graduated. Start marketing yourself during school, showing your work ethic and team skills.
