Research a topic of your choice and create a detailed blog post of your findings

How to research?

Your Coursework project is called a ‘SMALL SCALE RESEARCH PROJECT’

You will be marked on your ability to research your chosen subject and how well you use your research in your PRESENTATION SCRIPT

You will be judged not on the quantity of research carried out, but on the quality of it

For example: Is of higher quality than:

How to research?

Research is more than just finding an article and quoting it!

The aim of research is to enhance our understanding of a subject and increase our knowledge of the chosen subject area!

Your research will be collected in your ANNOTATED CATALOGUE and you must provide an explanation of HOW the research item has informed your understanding of the chosen topic

Turn to the back of your course handbooks and read the exemplar ANNOTATED CATALGOUE

How to research?

We will now practice research and develop our skills

By the end of this task you will have:

• Found an academic article

• Read and annotated the article

• Create a blog post that• Summarises the arguments/points in the

article• Include media of examples that demonstrate

the points being made

How to research?

Task 1

Log on to the SSCFILMStudies blog and click the link:

‘How to research’

Read the article and watch the accompanying videos

This is an example of the type of research you are going to carry out today and during your research projects

How to research?

Task 2

You must now create a blog post similar to the one your have just read

Click on the link ‘JUMP CUT’

Using the search engine, find an article that covers a topic you are interested in:

Film / Genre / Narrative / Star / Director / Institution etc

How to research?

Task 3

Now you have found an article you must PRINT the work to the G17 printer

You must now annotated the work and highlight the following:

1. Write down who the article is by and when it was written

2. Write down the key points from the essay - the key points that are being made - exactly as they are written in the magazine

3. Find a video clip or an image that illustrates the points that are being made

How to research?

Task 4

Blog your findings

You must include:

• Why you chose the article

• Who the article was written by and an overview of what it is about

• The main points of the article - including some quotations

• Whether or not you agree with the quotations - and why

• Videos and/or images of texts that relate to the ideas expressed in the article with some analysis

• An overall opinion of the article

Learning Objectives

Finalise your Fm3 Small Scale Research Project ‘focus’ area

Find one item of researching linked to your chosen topic

Create a blog post summarising and highlighting key points from your research item

ideas

You may use today’s lesson to finalise ideas for your project but you must show some signs of progress!

If you are stuck for ideas, try one or more of the following tasks:

Create a mind map with a topic / film / subject in the centre and write down everything you can think of to do with that topic

You should also note down names of key films, people etc that you think are relevant

ideas

You may use today’s lesson to finalise ideas for your project but you must show some signs of progress!

If you are stuck for ideas, try one or more of the following tasks:

Make a list of your favorite films, directors, genres, styles, studios, stars, franchises etc

Now bullet point the reasons your like each item

Then bullet point potential areas of research

• There Will Be Blood• Paul Thomas Anderson• Westerns

• Unique filmmaking?• Auteur?• Uniquely American?

• Unique filmmaking?• How does PTA’s personal psychology influence his films?• Do Western’s reflect America’s obsession with expansion and their

pioneering spirit?

Research

When you have decided on a research area you must begin your investigation

Task 1

Log on to the internet and find a general article that relates to your investigation

Task 2

Read the article and create a blog post detailing your findings.Your post must include:

1. Why you chose the article

2. Who the article was written by and an overview of what it is

about

3. The main points of the article - including some quotations

4. Whether or not you agree with the quotations - and why

5. Videos and/or images of texts that relate to the ideas

expressed in the article with some analysis

6. An overall opinion of the article

Learning Objectives

Know how to apply our research to our focus films

Complete a detailed micro analysis of ONE scene from our FOCUS FILM

Write the first paragraphs of your FM3 Small Scale Research Projects

Research

In her theory ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’, Laura Mulvey states:

“In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its phantasy on to the female form which is styled accordingly.

In their traditional exhibitionist role women are simultaneously looked at and displayed, with their appearance coded for strong visual and erotic impact so that they can be said to connote to-be-looked-at-ness.”

She goes on to say:

Women serve TWO functions within the narrative:

1. As an erotic object for the characters within the story

2. As an erotic object for the spectators within the auditorium

Researcg

Watch the following scene from Transformers and make notes on:

1. How are the micro elements used to ‘project the male phantasy on to the female form?

2. What are the major differences between the way the male and female characters are represented?

3. How does the female character connote ‘To-be-looked-at-ness’?

4. Consider ALL MICRO ELEMENTS, not just camera

5. How is the female character an erotic object for both the characters and the spectator?

TransformersDir: Michael Bay

Researcg

Read the sample paragraph you have been given for an example of how to apply research to analysis.

Researcg

You tasks for the remainder of the lesson are:

1. Pick ONE scene from your focus film and carry out a detailed analysis of the micro elements?

2. Read through your blog posts and find AT LEAST TWO quotes you can use to support your analysis?

3. Write at least TWO paragraphs of analysis, using your quotes as supporting evidence

4. You must include a minimum of TWO quotes

Starter Task

Write down what you consider to be the MOST RELEVANT information your research has taught you about your project.

Write down THREE areas of your project you find particularly difficult / hard to understand

This can include:

• Concepts you don’t understand• Concepts you disagree with• Information you have difficulty

researching etc

Learning Objectives

Identify areas of our research projects that require further exploration

Develop an Individual Learning plan including your own personal learning objectives

Continue researching topics and create ONE Blog post that completes at least ONE learning objective

For the remainder of the lesson you can:

• Use the internet• Go to the library to find a book• Analyse a film extract• Ask me for help

By the end of the session you must

• Complete ONE of your own learning objectives/targets

• Create a blog post that includes your findings
