Started on March 21, 2006 under a company called Odeo, by Jack Dorsey

Jack Dorsey wanted to create a new idea that would allow anyone to create a short message that would allow people to communicate with small groups of people

In 2007 Twitter became its own company

Twitter is estimated to have 2.5 million users

65,000,000 tweets are posted a day

Twitter has grown to become one of the most top ten visited sites

Today twitter is one of the most powerful tools in social media for people to use to communicate with one another in such a short message

According to Dustin Brady who wrote an article about 5 powerful ways to use Twitter in Higher Education

Listen and Reply –Read what people are saying but think before replying to what they wrote (participate in conversation)

Introduce Real People at Your School-not only talking to people on twitter, get out and promote more people on campus to use twitter

Participate in the Backchannel- During events at your school create hashtags to attract more people to event that may be going

Information Updates- Letting people know what is going on simply just like the news

Personal Enrichment-using your personal twitter to get the word out if people aren’t receiving it from the school’s twitter account

What is a tweet? A tweet is a message posted on twitter of 140 characters

Retweet (RT)-Helps you to quickly share a tweet with your followers

Direct message (DM)-private message between you and the sender

Follow-subscribing to a person’s tweets or updates

Followers-when a person has followed you

Unfollow- when you don’t follow someone anymore and you no longer see what they tweet

Hashtag (#)- Symbol to mark important topics (ex. #FF-FollowFriday)

Timeline (TL)-A list of your tweets and the people you follow on twitter

Reply- you can click the reply button located under a person’s tweet to respond to what there tweet is

Profile-Twitter account displaying information about the user and tweets they post

Protected/Private tweets-your tweets can only be shown to people who you allowed to follow you

Over capacity- when twitter is over capacitated meaning-too many people are on twitter

Mention (@)- when others put the “@” with your username

Trending topic- popular topics that are talked about

Follow count- How many people you follow or how many followers you have

Twitter jail- you can’t tweet anymore until someone frees you because you posted a 100 tweets per hour or 1000 tweets per day

Favorites-Tweets that a user likes a lot

Bio-A personal description used to show who you are located on your profile

@-used to call out usernames in tweets

Twitpic-a picture that you took and put with a tweet
